View Full Version : i am a newbee at this forum.... any forum for that matter smilodon May 26th, 2004, 21:33 PM petard May 26th, 2004, 21:38 PM You're not kidding. :D Well welcome to TZ. Have a look around, read the FAQs.... smilodon May 26th, 2004, 21:38 PM have been looking into microsoft alternatives lately... not that microsoft has not served me well so far but i just want to enquire about my options. have recently started using mozilla. its too early to comment about it yet. my current version linux is on download as i write this. buying and using agood orduct is not a bad thing, but i get a feeling that using microsoft products makes you very well trained to face hardships when trying anything new. i don't know if the interface of MS products is bery "user friendly" or that it is too familiar and trying anything new means getting out of my comfort zone. welll!1 any thoughts are very welcome smilodon May 26th, 2004, 21:41 PM You're not kidding. :D Well welcome to TZ. Have a look around, read the FAQs.... well i am embaressed but in the haste of posting something i forgot to write anything in my first message body :-) i have joined this forum cuz i have been reading some stuff from here for the past couple of days... very interesting. rik May 26th, 2004, 22:05 PM Welcome to Techzonez. Like petard said, Stick around, read the posts and FAQs and if you have a problem or question feel free to ask. lynchknot May 26th, 2004, 23:22 PM i have joined this forum cuz i have been reading some stuff from here for the past couple of days... very interesting. - oh-oh, now i'm embarrassed Welcome to Techzonez! SupaStar May 26th, 2004, 23:43 PM Welcome to TZ smilodon. Enjoy the heap fo MS alternatives out there and play with everything until you find something you like. I tried Firefox one day and now it's my browser of choice! phishhead May 27th, 2004, 00:47 AM well if you like mozilla then you'll fit right in. But you should really try opera if you want a real browser. *whack lynch's bat to the kneecaps.* Big Booger May 27th, 2004, 01:21 AM Mozilla, Opera, Firefox, Netscape, Ghostzilla, and a few others are great. They all have good points. I am sold on firefox but I have used all of the above. If you want to really get out of MS's ship, and jump into a whole new realm, download the latest version of Mandrake Linux 10.0 Official (http://techzonez.com/comments.php?shownews=8928). It is free, and just takes time to download. I have installed it on two PCs without a hitch (I suggest installing all the options available especially the developmental packages). Though, depending on your hardware it may take time and a little effort to get it installed. Drivers are usually the downfall, thanks to wonderful companies that don't create Linux drivers for their products. It is a shame really, but you cannot fault Linux for that. With Mandrake you get a several media players, audio players, a CD burner, FTP, Web servers, firewalls, K-Office or Open Office, about 50-60 games (some of them 3D like tux racer), scientific tools, the gimp (a photoshop-like application), and so on for free. About the only thing I'd say you'd have trouble with is gaming in Linux. Though support through WineX ($15) is even making gaming a viable option. :D lynchknot May 27th, 2004, 02:27 AM *whack lynch's bat to the kneecaps.* Tonya Harding would love you as a neighbor - she lives in the area. :p rik May 27th, 2004, 03:21 AM Again Welcome, and don't mind all the Fruitcakes around here...(LK, phish, boogs, SS). Just be careful around petard...no tellin what you might step in ;) petard May 27th, 2004, 03:46 AM Again Welcome, and don't mind all the Fruitcakes around here...(LK, phish, boogs, SS). Just be careful around petard...no tellin what you might step in ;) Hey! I resemble that remark! :D z3n May 27th, 2004, 04:21 AM Welcome Smilodon, I'm new in this colourful hood also.. :) biker666_05 May 27th, 2004, 08:03 AM welcome... dont worry ppl here arent so mean around here zipp51 May 27th, 2004, 12:13 PM Welcome to TZ smilodon. We are a happy and curious bunch here.Just normal tech inspired people.Err,you be the judge.Read or watch a movie on the TZ forum rules so that you can get familiar on posting do's and don't's.And remember the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask. :D smilodon May 29th, 2004, 20:04 PM Rik, Lynchknot, Supastar, Phishhead, Big booger, Z3n, biker666_05 & zippp51 thank you all for your thoughts... the response is quiet overwhelming. I did have a look at the FAQs too. Supastar.... i have still not been able to make out the differance between mozilla browser and the firefox. my best guess is that one is the subset of the other. i am reasonably happy with mozilla for now. Pishhead... i havent looked into opera yet. if you have time please mention to all of us some pros and cons of opera over others. rik, biker666_51, zip... thanks for the suggestion regarding pekard... but i might have stepped into something already. well but i like the "bunch" so far :-) Big booger... i finished downloading the red hat linux 9. i do not have a cd burner and dispite the claims and help from various websites i could not install it. i haven't given up hope yet. but i must admit that i am quiet used to the simple GUI - may be not a good backend - of microsoft, startinng at installation to advance usage of the products. with linux i think quiet a bit of background knowledge on the part of users is assumed. but like i said i am not shying off... Big Booger May 30th, 2004, 03:09 AM Smilodon, You can pick up a 52X24X52 CDRW drive for $19. I'd recommend it. Especially considering that most CDR disks are less than 20 cents each.. depending on where you get them. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=714601&Sku=M199-1004&CatId=87 It is with a rebate. That is why it is $19. If you just want to buy it without dealing with rebates: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=775631&Sku=N61-1016&CatId=87 $29 no rebate forums necessary. :D With that you can install Red Hat 9 in no time, though I'd recommend the latest version of Mandrake or Fedora (the next generation Red Hat), as Red Hat 9 has been abandoned. SupaStar May 31st, 2004, 02:21 AM Supastar.... i have still not been able to make out the differance between mozilla browser and the firefox. my best guess is that one is the subset of the other. i am reasonably happy with mozilla for now. Here's the low-down from their website... What's the difference between Firefox and Mozilla? Mozilla (Application Suite, also known as SeaMonkey) is a complete suite of web related applications, such as a browser, a mail/news client, a chat client and much more. Firefox is just a browser, which makes it a better choice if you already have a mail client for example. Also, since Firefox is smaller than the whole Mozilla suite, it's faster and easier to use. Note, though, that Firefox is not just the standalone Mozilla browser. The user interface in Firefox differs from Mozilla in many ways. For example, Firefox has customizable toolbars.
