Booger's New Burner: Plextor PX-712A DVD+/-R/RW

Just returned from a trip to the Pasokon (PC) shop. I went to just look and wound up buying a new DVD burner. It was the fastest drive they had on the shelf. I haven't burnt any DVDs yet, but I am itching to try it out. It should prove rather useful.

I bought the 12X model, but they only had the 8X media.. where can you get 12X DVD+Rs at? I bought the white faceplate model. They had black and white. I wanted silver to match my case but they didn't have one.

It comes with 1 Red DVD with about 10 applications and utilities. From Nero 6 SE to PowerDVD 5. Installation was a breeze. The loading tray is nearly silent, and silky smooth. I am going to try backing up some data soon and perhaps make a backup copy of my "Last Samurai" DVD. :D

First dip into DVD burning. Knowing my luck something better or faster will come out in the next week.

I bought the 12X model, but they only had the 8X media.. where can you get 12X DVD+Rs at? I bought the white faceplate model. They had black and white. I wanted silver to match my case but they didn't have one.
They have Black internal DVD drives there!!!
I've been looking for black. All they have here are white! And the black ones are external. Not fitting for my Dell case....:(

I want to tell you about CCGBA. That is Compulsive Computer Gear Buyers Anonymous. It is designed just for those that can't resist that - well, it could be a DVD burner.

It could also be that new MB-CPU combo, LED monitor, 200 GB HD, video card, another GB of memory. Wait ---- a few deep breaths and I will regain control.

Nice Looking Drive BB, Blank Media will be your next worry... 12x is rare as hen's teeth, even rarer are Dual-layer disks ;) This is a big problem as there are shortages everywhere!! I think RIAA and MPAA will have a hand in slowing Dual-layer disks, since you can make 1 disc personal-backups ;)

You're telling me.. I am literally trying to stay out of the PC shop because my money tends to go from my hand to the store clerk, then I wake up while driving home and remember what I've just done.
I have a wife and I can't just go out and buy stuff... like I did before marriage.. I really need to start saving for a family.. but the hardware calls to me like dracula at midnight.

I want some 12X media to try this out.. but as you say Cash, it's like finding last year's easter egg.

Superstar, get this drive and you can eliminate 2 drives.. it does it all. You won't go wrong with this drive.

You won't regret any DVD drive these days.My 4x Sony DW-U14A is not the fastest but is very reliable and reads everything.Imagine 9GB of compressed archiving on 1 dvd disk.The Plextors are among the fastest,so you made a good choice indeed.As far as starting a family and saving money and possibly still being married after your compulsive purchase your screwed.(just joking). :D

Well I finally got around to burning my first ISO. I burned a 4.4GB file with 8X Ricoh RW DVD+R media (4.7GB) at 12X. It burned the whole DVD in 6 minutes. I am impressed.

And it is nearly silent when it burns. You hear a slight speed increase but over all it doesn't make a very loud whirling sound. My samsung 16X DVD drive sounds like a weedeater on crack when I pop a disk in just to play it.
