Software that you need to download and install. I have listed free versions for each type needed.
1. If you do not have an anti-virus program you must install one and make sure that it is kept up to date. Update it often and run a complete test every few days. A free AV program is AVG. Download (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)
2. AdAware (run often and update before each scan)- Download (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)
3. Spybot Search and Destroy (run often and update before each scan) - Download (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download)
4. Firewall, ZoneAlarm is a free download - Download (http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html?part=zonealarm%2523038%3Bsubj=dlpage)
5. Regclean to clean registry errors - Download (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,4666,00.asp)

I'll have to explain this to you Rachel. I was new around here and some of the fellas were trying to help me - one (fastgame) even got on the telephone with me. Long story short: I spent several hours trying to figure out why my PC will not boot from disk to reinstall XP. The problem was the fact that I was trying to boot from a MS Office Frontpage CD!!! - I was so embarrased! :o Every once in a while these guys still tease me about it - and when you posted........suddenly, i'm not alone :p

LOL, I think I joined you and Conan... hehe :D
this is just too funny.
Seriously though, Rachel, i think to be really sure about your progs and settings, you may want to simply go through each program and confirm the settings... ie. That the Proxy (if used) is correct, that you are dialing right number for Dialup internet... etc etc
Best bet would to make a list of your hardware and software and perhaps ppl on this forum can suggest the best settings.
Good Luck. And dont feel embarased, we all had to start from scratch... and we dont bite, this is actually a friendly place to go.
