ok guys I'm having a problem here... my cdrw/dvd player isn't working on my computer consistently. by this I mean it's working some of the time then will go off for a couple of days. it has power running to it so I know that's not the deal.

for example: last night I was trying to load Warcraft 3 on... thee splash screen came up with the install button... but then when I clicked install it said the dish wasn't found... happened to me last week when I was trying to burn something...

any thoughts guys?

Faulty IDE cable perhaps? Try changing the cable and ensure that the drive is setup with the correct master/slave jumper setting.

I'll try changing the IDE cable... but the master/slave setup is good to go...

Laser might be dirty. If the laser is dirty and cannot read data that will happen.

Had a similar problem with a previous Liteon CD burner myself, would read at times and then fail to even show up in hardware properties on my pc most other times. Finally had enough of screwing around with it and went out and replaced it, simply I find the Liteon's fantastic for burning but lacking in lifespan.
