A Microsoft product manager has said that the company has not made any effort to prevent Windows XP Service Pack 2 from installing on computers without properly licensed copies of Windows XP. SP1 was released with anti-piracy measures aimed at rendering pirated copies of XP inoperable. Barry Goffe, the product manager who spoke with ComputerTimes, explained the decision.

"It was a tough choice, but we finally decided that even if someone has pirated copy of Windows, it is more important to keep him safe than it is to be concerned about the revenue issue," he added. "Having these unsecured users means bigger worm and virus outbreaks - which also impacts the Internet and consequently, our legitimate users as well."

That's an outdated story. In fact they have implemented security measures in SP2 Release Candidate 2.

But the Bas****s have still got the check in the beta versions. The 2139 build didn't even install on a vlk version of xp.

With the latest SP2 build 2149, it'll install but you won't be able to update Windows if your key is tagged as invalid.

Or even if your key is valid :(
I had that problem. SP2 installed fine. It run, then when I went to look for updates (in the separated Windows update for SP2 users, it told me my key was invalid, and it is not, because it is a work computer :(

Yes, but the official release of SP2 has been moved again.
And just in MS pushing back releases, it moved the release of WUS to mid 2005 :(
