Is it because of my CPU? (AMD XP2000 @ 1666mhz)

I have 1GB of ram but if I do something like run a search for "gif" on my PC, my PC freezes up (expl.exe at 99%)

I'm sick of it.

If I multitask too much, the same thing happens. I have run my PC w/o eye candy and it makes no difference.

I also use PD and keep it defragged .

Have you looked at that article? Some mentions of ways to fix it. Though I don't know if it will apply to you.

Also they said in another forum, to simply right click explorer.exe in the task manager and then set the priority to below normal, or even low. Ignore the message that pops up. That may help you.

Ok i found out the problem after doing some more forum searching online. Basically what I did was remember that there was this one movie file that I could never delete because windows always said it was being used by another program, i'm sure you've seen this before.

I was stupid and never thought much about it. I knew I could delete it via cmd but I wanted to see what was using the file. I downloaded a program called Process Explorer which can tell you what process is using what file, dll's etc.

You can get that program here (http://www.sysinternals.com/).
The program broke down explorer.exe and sure enough it was using the movie file, which is why I could never delete it. I then went into cmd and deleted the file for good.

Since that moment I have not had one hang/crash of explorer.exe.

There's another fix but possibly does not apply to you.

Also do you have your drives set to index files for fast file searching? If not, I suggest it. Further are you compressing the drive to save space? If so, I suggest not doing that.

Time for a reformat?

I'm glad you said that Conan - I was going to say it myself, but then again thats my answer to any annoying problem that I just can't seem to fix.

It works...

Backup and wipe it down.
