...for a camera that store's its data in png. Does anyone know of a camera that takes 2+ MP images, and stores them in any lossless format (tiff, bmp, tga, raw, etc)?

anything in tiff that isn't costly will do too. I don't need a fancy gizmo. I just need something that takes good pictures.

why not get a nice 3.5-4 megapixal and convert it to the format you want.

Even the 5 megapixel digitals have dropped in price! If you take a photo with plenty of light on you subject you shouldn't experience much (if any) graininess or quality loss.

PNG format? That's not a popular format for digital camera makers right now. It's pretty much JPEG. Your best bet is to get a decent camera and convert the file afterwards.

png has lossless compression, but it takes more processing power. Depending upon the image, sometimes png compression gives a smaller file than even jpg. It's someting like zipping, but better. I have a problem with JPG's screwing up the image. By converting it to png you don't get back the lost data.

take a look at these two examples. The png is only 15.5 k and the image looks just like I saw it. While the jpg is 86.7 k and the data loss is apparent even at 1 compression level.

Get a camera that saves in raw or tiff mode. Then convert them to png after downloading them to the PC.

Ok, sorry, you said raw or tiff... You know of any that DO save the images in any of these lossless formats AND are cheap? As I've said before, i don't need any fancy toy.

I don't know what you call cheap. You buy a cheap camera, more than likely you will be disappointed especially if you are worried about image quality.

I'd personally get a sony. The sony Mavica stores stills in TIFF mode.

• File Formats: JPEG, GIF, TIFF*, MPEG1

$299.95 2MP version:

$599.95 5.1MP version:

The 5 megapixel version even saves to CDRW.
• Recording Media: 3" (8cm) CD-R/RW Optical Disc

Both are great cameras.

Below are 11 digital cameras all supporting TIFF mode with varying price and feature ranges:

And below are 64 cameras that support raw mode:

Hope that helps. But the bottom line is you get what you pay for. Buy a cheap camera and you'll not only be disappointed, you will also probably be upgrading sooner which in the long term will cost you more money.

:D

And if I had to make a camera purchase today I'd definitely go with Nikon:

A bit pricey, but worth every penny. Every person I know who owns a Nikon has been more than pleased. That Nikon Coolpix 5700 supports both RAW and TIFF modes as well as JPEG.

I have a Nikon CoolPix885. Got it as refurbished. It was quite cheap considering is a heck of a camera. This one can save in tiff too, with a file size of 9 MB exact.
One of our fellow TZ users game me a couple of links to a digital camera web site, and I pick it thru there (can't remember the web site thoguht)
I am sure that newer models thought are in the same proce range or even cheaper offering better quality. Get a refurbished. You will save 50% ;)

the COOLPIX 885 is pretty good for $200, but I think it'll be great if I can get a refurbished "Sony CD Mavica® Digital Camera MVC-CD500" which BB's mentioned above. Now that really IS good, 156 MB CD's. What more do you need!
