TRENTON, N.J. -- State and federal authorities continued to investigate two incidents in which laser beams were aimed at separate aircraft flying over Morris County in the last several days.

Just remember, this is the same state that Orson Welles freaked out with his 1939 radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds." They actually believed it was real.

Were they large beams or similar to the 'laser'-sighting beams for missile launchers??

Update: New Jersey Man Charged With Pointing Laser At Aircraft (http://www.wnbc.com/news/4044726/detail.html?treets=ny&tid=2653888726813&tml=ny_4pm&tmi=ny_4pm_1_03000201042005&ts=H)

NEWARK, N.J. -- A Parsippany man who first claimed his daughter aimed a laser at a helicopter later told federal agents that he pointed the light beam at two aircraft, authorities said Tuesday.

Bus-ted.

This actually sounds a little dodgy... initially I thought it would be difficult to have a Green colored laser (as most common are red - this is due to the electronics involved in making a laser work) but quick google search saw you can buy novelty green lasers. However, the big limitation is the power output and thus the operation range.

The reports said the aircraft were flying above 3000Ft and they were blinded by Laser... most of these laser have a range of a couple hundred yards, and you cant see the beam, so how would he know he was actually pointing in the right direction, let alone being able to point the laser directly into the eyes of both pilots to blind them!?!? Usually at that height, people look like ants, and straight down beneath the aircraft...

Perhaps this is a stooge effort, to bring in a new anti-terror law for banning laser equipment and shining at vehicles... dont worry, these will be banned in Australia tomorrow before anyone can protest!! Draconian Politicians!!

:D A little from Column A and a little from Column B...

It would be fair enough if this was true... but inlight of several revelations of conspiracies and cover ups etc, and anti-terrorism laws etc, it seems the more democratic countries (especially Aus) are becoming more and more Draconian and regulatory... creating new laws for loopholes in older ones, laws to stop some of our basic freedoms, but more importantly, laws that include bigger and bigger fines to line the Politician's pockets for revenue raising!!

Laws are to protect people and other people, not to be regulations to make money  Just read in local paper and jet ski person will be facing jail time or $100,000 fines for riding in our beach next to some dolphins who commonly check out boats etc

Soon they will be banning Remote Control Cars/Planes/Helicopters, because the military use them as UAVs so people might be spying or can mount small rocket explosives!! C'mon, this is excessive!!

My point was, with laser-flashings of jets, with possible terrorism hints in the news, you have to be seriously stupid to pull a stunt like that. It's just asking for grief. Like wearing a kick-me sign.
