View Full Version : Blown and Leaking Motherboard Capacitors - A Serious Problem?

While it may be true that we go through a lot more motherboards at PCstats.com than an average consumer will in a lifetime, it's the boards that fail which seem to get noticed most - especially when they force a dreaded system reinstall. This particular Slot A motherboard was recently retired from active duty because the computer it was in became unstable, and too unreliable.
I took special interes on this, since I have actually seen 3 capacitors completely blown out at the top, and some more showing bad signs. Since they were close to the CPU, I thought it was usual for them if the function was to regulate voltage to the CPU, but reading this makes me think it is not (after all I don't have the master design of the motherboard)
Anyhow, I would like to share this with all of you, since it might be something to look for when you find weird computer problems in systems that otherwise would be healthy. The computers I have seen this are Vectra PIII (I think VL8 is the model) from 500 Mhz to 1 GHz. About 10 of them. Knowing that I am armed to open a support case with HP now :D

Hehe. I doubt I will have much luck, but we have about 30 of those machines, so you can imagine the pain to support them :p

This has been an issue with capacitors for nearly a year.

I posted an article on the front page back in Feb 2003.

Upps ... :smash:
Didn't see that one. Still it is a good reminder that there is such problem with mobos, and it is actually pretty common

Thanks Reverend. I remember the issue from before. Couldn't remember where to find the information.
