View Full Version : just got a letter from my isp
lynchknot February 10th, 2005, 07:41 AM haha, not it's not one of those it's this!
ISP will be upgrading all of our High-Speed Internet Service customers from 3Mbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream to speeds as fast as 4Mbps downstream and 384Kbps upstream - at no additional charge. :D
The small print: Actual speeds vary and are not guaranteed. Many factors affect speed
egghead February 10th, 2005, 09:29 AM sweet!
much better than my puny 1.5 mg up and 500k down
PIPER February 10th, 2005, 09:56 AM haha, not it's not one of those it's this!

petard February 11th, 2005, 19:06 PM Yeah, Comca$t sent me the same message about 6 months ago. I saw no noticeable difference. However, I have no complaints as to my current bandwidth. :)
Reverend February 11th, 2005, 19:59 PM Coincidence or what ??
I got an email yesterday from my ISP
We're always looking for ways to offer customers the best possible service, and that's why we're busy upgrading your line to 2Mb. That's twice your current speed. You will be pleased to know that, as a 1Mb customer, you'll receive this upgrade first. In addition, we're reducing your price for three months, giving you even better value.
You don't have to do a thing
Rest assured, this upgrade is at no extra cost to you and it requires no extra equipment. It will happen sometime between 17th February and 9th March 2005.
egghead February 11th, 2005, 20:53 PM oh wow!
no cost to you?
that is awesome...
I hope they don't start sending bandwidth overuse tax letters
Some isp's here scam customers by charging $xx a month and lock you in with contract for a year.
The fine print is that you can only use xx gigs up and xx gigs down a month.
example 3 GB free data transfer(2GB down/1GB up). additional extra traffic $10/Gb
http://www.meganow.net/pri.htm
glad to hear they increased your speeds...
when will i get it?
cash_site February 15th, 2005, 23:08 PM I think so REV, i got a letter from ISP saying they have upgraded network too, BUT typical aussie cash-cows... we have to pay for upgrade to new connection plans, and they have the data limits like Egg said
mrA February 16th, 2005, 13:54 PM I had a 512/256 connection a few months ago. My ISP upgraded my speed to 1024/512 late last year and just last month they bumped me up to 2Mb/1Mb. All free of charge..
God bless them! :)
cash_site February 17th, 2005, 00:47 AM I had a 512/256 connection a few months ago. My ISP upgraded my speed to 1024/512 late last year and just last month they bumped me up to 2Mb/1Mb. All free of charge..
God bless them! :)
You guys are lucky...
ps. I think the cow in your avatar is flying upwards... the clouds are going the wrong way
mrA February 17th, 2005, 20:20 PM why yes he is cash... i'm thinkin' he's kinda cold by now.... i should probably let him down soon
SupaStar February 21st, 2005, 05:51 AM Well it seems my ISP are good with their customers having just slashed $20/month from my bill!
Gotta be happy with that!
Zema February 21st, 2005, 16:21 PM In December my ISP wrote me to advise that my connection is being upgraded to 1mb free of charge - no restrictions or small print either! I was originally on 512. So it's all good news! :)
cash_site February 22nd, 2005, 10:12 AM has it been mentioned that Zema's avatar looks familar??
GimieGimieGimie February 22nd, 2005, 13:05 PM What ISP you with Rev?
I'm with Pipex, on a 512/256k connection for £23.40 a month, unlimited of course :D
I'm happy with 512k download speeds, 1mb would be nice, but i've been on 1mb download speeds before with Home Choice, and i sacrificed the speed for an ISP with no NAT, and with higher upload speeds, my 1mb connection had a really really shit 115k upload cap.
I've been looking around for an ISP with a better UPLOAD speed, i find upload speed more important then download speeds in this day and age!
Pings in games depend on upload speeds, similiary, hosting a small games server requires lots of upload bandwidth and since i'm a gamer, this is more important to me then download speeds :D
I've looked up ISPS on adslguide.org, but RIP OFF Britain is still asking too much money for higher upload speeds!
The best i saw, was a 400k upload with Bulldog, but Bulldog i've heard bad comments about, you have to switch over from BT to use their services and the whole service is becoming too "main stream" for my liking, i like to stay with little known ISPS, since they are not swamped with the usage of the general public like Tiscali etc, and i'm always enjoying FULL SPEEDS with Pipex :D
Does anyone who lives in the UK know of any good deals going on that will beat the pants off my 512k/256k connection with Pipex?
I've been with the company a whole year this upcoming April, so it may just be the perfect time to switch to a better provider because my 12 month contract is coming to an end :D
Conan February 22nd, 2005, 13:15 PM What ISP you with Rev?
Rev uses BT.
GimieGimieGimie February 22nd, 2005, 14:46 PM Rev uses BT.
Ahhhh, so is BT finally pulling it's socks up then Rev? :D
BT are such greedy bastards, i can never trust them to deliver a service without paying too higher cost :(
GimieGimieGimie February 22nd, 2005, 14:59 PM I guess the answer to my previous question is a big NO...
I just checked up on the BT packages and they are still no better then they was 6 months ago, infact, i cannot find a package that doesn't have a monthly limit!
http://www.bt.com/broadband/news/
I understand that bandwidth costs, but if other providers can provide a service with no caps, why can't the people that actually own the telephone wires the other ISPS use to transfer data do the same?
It boogles me, that BT would have 100x more resources then all the other ISPS using their lines, but still insists on restrictions.
That said, i wonder if i would ever download 30gb in a month?
I never actually pay attention to how much i download, i download 700mb video files sometimes , so i might just max it out
Reverend February 22nd, 2005, 19:34 PM That said, i wonder if i would ever download 30gb in a month? You've hit the nail on the head.
Yes BT have limits, but 30GB a month is more than enough for the majority of their users.
BT have certainly improved their services in the last year or so.IMHO
phishhead February 22nd, 2005, 19:42 PM I usually can do that in a few weeks and if I'm on a roll couple of days. do they cap the uploads too?
Reverend February 22nd, 2005, 19:59 PM I usually can do that in a few weeks and if I'm on a roll couple of days. do they cap the uploads too?The 30GB is all inclusive.
30GB is plenty for *legal* usage.
phishhead February 22nd, 2005, 20:20 PM oh jeez 30 gigs total up and down. I couldnt handle that. Since getting broadband sometimes I'll just download crap just to see how fast I can get it. too many yrs on dial up I need to make up for.
Reverend February 22nd, 2005, 20:45 PM Since getting broadband sometimes I'll just download crap just to see how fast I can get it. too many yrs on dial up I need to make up for.I must admit i was the same. But the novelty has worn off now.
But with BT offering the increase for free,i'll happily take it regardless of the limits. :)
GimieGimieGimie March 3rd, 2005, 00:05 AM Update on my service provider, it appears BULLDOGS recent 4mb/400k deals have scared all the ISPS into providing overdue better services! :D

cash_site March 3rd, 2005, 02:37 AM Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon with speed increases... we have a few ISPs releasing ADSL2+ packages with speed from 6,8,12Mbps... and if you are very close to exchange you can get 24mbps over copper  amazing... hopefully more telco's and ISPs get the pressue too!! and offer cheaper/better serviced plans :D
