View Full Version : Xandros 3.0.1
Big Booger February 15th, 2005, 03:57 AM http://techzonez.com/comments.php?shownews=12140
Without a doubt one of the most user friendly Linux releases yet.. and seeing as it is now being released freely, with the included "CROSSOVER PLUGIN" you cannot beat it. This means you can run your favorite windows apps on Linux right out of the box without any tinkering... :D
Take a look at the link above to the TZ front page for download information.
Update: Below are the files for the 3.02 release of Xandros. Be sure to use them instead as they are the latest available.

You will download it, unzip it, create an installation CD, then install it.
Downloading the file
If you already have BitTorrent software installed, go to step 3. Otherwise, follow the instructions here for using BitTornado.
To download the file
1. Download BitTornado (3.3 MB).
2. Install it by double-clicking the .exe file.
3. If you are behind a firewall, open ports 6881 to 6889 (consult your firewall documentation for details) to allow you to share with other downloaders.
4. Download Xandros Desktop OS Open Circulation Edition.
5. If you are using the Internet Explorer Web browser, you are automatically prompted to begin downloading the zip file. For other Web browsers, double-click the .torrent file to start the download. The file size is 540 MB. You can pause the download, and even pause and shut down the computer and resume a download later by double-clicking the .torrent file.
6. When finished, help us save on bandwidth costs so that we can continue to provide this no charge download and leave your BitTorrent client open.
Checking the file
You can check that the file downloaded correctly using a check sum program. This step is optional and recommended. If you have a check sum program already, you can use it. Otherwise, you can download and use the free winMd5Sum program as outlined here. You will use one of the following check sums:

rik February 15th, 2005, 16:34 PM Hmm...the screenshots show that the Crossover Plugin is available for purchase. But I assume the screenies are old?
Big Booger February 16th, 2005, 13:57 PM The deluxe version has crossover plugin which is what this version is. The screenies are of the non-deluxe version 2.0. Sorry about that mistake. :o
I am getting this on the torrent file listed on the frontpage now. Gonna try it out as soon as I get it downloaded.
Big Booger February 26th, 2005, 09:31 AM Well I took the plunge and installed Xandros this weekend. It is one weekend later than I expected to, but last weekend I was sick.
So I burned the ISO, popped in the CD, and was running the OS within 15 minutes. All my hardware was configured correctly, including my HP multifunction printer, Logitech Mx510, Logitech wireless keyboard, Canon IXY digital camera, Internet settings, everything was nearly perfect.
So the first thing I did was go to TZ using firefox which was pre setup and works great. Using version 1.0 atm. One thing is the fonts.. they are not as good as the windows fonts. THey look pixelated or something... I will be installing true type fonts soon....
Updating applications with Xandros couldn't be easier.. You can simply click the "UPDATE ALL XANDROS APPS" button at the top of the Xandros Network window or you simply open the Xandros Networks prompt, click on the applications you want to update, and then select the type and the app you want to update, and click update.
After that Xandros goes on the net and downloads the latest versions that are compatible with your version. I had firefox and Thunderbird both updated in less than 3 minutes.
In fact I kind of like Xandros more than Mandrake.. and that is quite hard to believe. But before I officially declare it, I want to spend some more time playing around with it.
Xandros seems like a very refined version of Linux... it looks as professional as windows.. but still shows some of the "communist" look that haunts the early days of Linux.. like the cheesy sound icon, and wierd logoff buttons...
But, the great thing is Xandros makes it as simple as a few clicks to change almost every setting, button, and theme you want to change.. from the way you can open your windows, to how you click and close things.... from the xandros way, to a more KDE based environment right up to a windows clone....
The other great feature is that Crossover plugin is already installed and setup... that means I can install several of my favorite windows based apps without much effort at all... And it is free, though it is a 30 day trial.
Skype is even preinstalled... windows doesn't even offer that... All I have to do is set it up. Now that is grand.
It will take time to get used to Xandros. With time, and enough patience this OS could replace windows... I see no reason other than gaming........... and a few funky windows only apps that would stop me from doing it entirely.
One thing I will say is about drivers... again, compared to windows this version of Linux still is lacking... I don't blame Xandros for that... that's ATI, Nvidia, and all the other card makers.... They should put as much emphasis on Linux as they do windows, and the support would improve.. of course it would be more costly and take more time... but then you the user would be able to serious consider both OS as equals and decide for yourself which is better...
That won't happen anytime soon.. but who knows, maybe in a couple of years.. :D
Take a look at the image I posted.. I might have more coming in the future..
efc February 26th, 2005, 13:49 PM BB - Good report. After you have used it a while, let me know whether I should switch over from Mandrake.
Curio February 26th, 2005, 13:58 PM Go to Windows Upate with Internet Explorer and do an update.
I don't know why it amuses me but doing a Windows Update on linux does.
This isn't of course down to Xandros it's down to CXOffice - I do it on my SuSE box when I need a cheap amusement.
rik February 26th, 2005, 16:51 PM That was gonna be one of my questions. For example if I run MS Office on it would I still be able to perform updates for those apps? Or AV software, would the same ones work?...
Big Booger February 26th, 2005, 17:15 PM Open Xandros Networks
Select Edit -> "Set Application Sources"
Check "Debian Unsupported Site"
Select OK
Select Settings -> "Expert View"
Now do a Search for your desired program
Select the install link to install it
After this I was able to download and install many software titles.
Warning: Debian repositories are not officially supported by Xandros and installing software from an unsuported repository can potentially frag your system especially if you mess with KDE. However, installing most applications from the unsupported site is unlikely to create problems.
That helped a lot in my daily fun. I have been using Xandros for about 3 hours now. I've managed to update all software from Xandros.. but there were several apps I wanted.. so I used the tip above to get more apps from the "unsupported debian database"
And I have been having fun trying to get my mx510 mouse to work fully. It now functions bascially as a 3 button and scroll mouse... but I have found a way to get the back and forward buttons to work and make it work more like in windows.
I am using the following site:
http://www.erickenny.com/misc/linux-business.html#mouse
Just getting too tired.. its 1:15 am here.. so I am heading off to slumber.
@rik, for AV, just use Fprot in Linux.. it works fine.
rik February 26th, 2005, 17:24 PM "Thank You and Good Night."
Big Booger February 27th, 2005, 15:45 PM I will post more on Xandros. It's an interesting alternative to windows. :D
rik February 27th, 2005, 16:34 PM I've been downloading it for about 23 hours now...slow,slow,slow.
efc March 1st, 2005, 00:11 AM I've been downloading it for about 23 hours now...slow,slow,slow.
Same here. It took me most of two days to finish.
My first install did not work. The Mandrake that was originally on the drive continued to load. I did a low level format and then got a good Xandros installation.
So far I like the way it is layed out. The only real problem is that I haven't been able to set up my network printer which resides on a windows computer.
rik March 1st, 2005, 03:31 AM I finally got mine but haven't had time to burn a cd or get a system ready to put it on. I'm lookin at my old celeron 300a to try it on. It has 98 on it right now and I'm not wanting to retire it...just hard to let go.
Big Booger March 1st, 2005, 10:26 AM Make sure to check out the Xandros forums for help. http://forums.xandros.com/
I've been lurking over there.. picked up a lot of good information.
Big Booger March 2nd, 2005, 15:00 PM Thought I'd post another screenie.
Curio March 3rd, 2005, 20:07 PM Did you realise it's whats been left over from Corel Linux?
Not so keen now eh.
Curio March 5th, 2005, 12:04 PM useful straight away...........

now get burner working properly..........
apt-get update
apt-get install k3b
there are some additional packages mentioned in the package apt-get them as well if you like.
Add K3b to the menu via Launch - Applications - System - Menu Editor (its in /usr/bin).
Fonts are a bit crap so.........
apt-get install msttcorefonts
- Keep apt-getting til you are happy (or break it).
Big Booger March 5th, 2005, 12:41 PM For those less command prompt oriented, with Xandros you no longer have to use the command prompt. They have an apt-get frontend gui.. called Xandros Network.
You can just add those deb's curio listed to the Xandros Network app. And it will work fine.
Nice tips curio. The fonts are crap.
Curio March 5th, 2005, 14:09 PM I broke Xandros Networks when I did that - probably because I already created a sources.list manually, oops! Here is a repair tip - if you too manage to break XN, delete sources.list and reboot:-)
That seemed like a lot of work just to avoid typing "apt-get install %progname%" when you already know what you want to install. However browsing the progs is much friendlier as you can see what ones you are unfamiliar with are for.
I like both methods now, woohoo!
Maybe I am a just a techno weenie.

Here here. Nothing like a techno weenie :D
rik March 29th, 2005, 03:01 AM I think you just like weenies Boogs...
;)
Anyhoo I just installed this and am getting everything running...but I'm remiss on how to run commands like ifconfig...my router is setup to allow access only by MAC address and I can't find how to run the ifconfig command. any help here?
Big Booger March 29th, 2005, 03:05 AM Open a command prompt, su to root. Enter your password.
Then use the following command tables to enter the information you'd like to setup:
http://www.computerhope.com/unix/uifconfi.htm
rik March 29th, 2005, 04:45 AM I'm sorry...still st00pid. Would that be from the "run command"? and "su to root"?
I'm really new here...
Big Booger March 29th, 2005, 05:03 AM take a look at the screenshots. It should make this a bit easier. I know, the first time I did it I was like wtf???
:D
The first shows how to get to the console in Xandros. The second shows the steps for switching to the root user.
1badger11 March 29th, 2005, 05:34 AM Not nit picking, just a suggestion for running the su command, always run it using the full path (/bin/su) this way you won't unintentionally run a trojaned su command. Just my 2 cents.
Badger
rik March 29th, 2005, 13:58 PM doh! Thanks BB.
rik March 30th, 2005, 18:17 PM More goodies...

rik March 31st, 2005, 01:39 AM Fonts are a bit crap so.........
apt-get install msttcorefonts
I couldn't get this to work...

Am I doing something wrong or is my Xandros install maybe corrupt?
Big Booger March 31st, 2005, 03:55 AM I say try them again. If you get the same errors, it could be an error in the Network temporarily.
I'll try bitdefender later.
As for the MSfonts, open up xandros network, do a search and use the term msttcorefonts.
Don't use that apt-get stuff. do it through the Xandros network and it should work. At least it did for me.
rik April 2nd, 2005, 04:37 AM Huh?
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
msttcorefonts: Depends: cabextract (>= 0.1-2) but it is not installable
esDone.
Curio April 2nd, 2005, 11:43 AM You added the unstable tree to the resources didn't you?
Big Booger April 2nd, 2005, 12:36 PM Rik,
Pop your Xandros install CD back into the drive. Reboot. Run the setup again, and it will basically restore your system back to a prestine state.
I did this at the very beginning of my intro to Xandros. It works 100%.
Curio April 2nd, 2005, 20:26 PM You can also remove cxoffice via the menu then reload it again to get your 30 days back - but you gotta load all the apps again.
rik April 3rd, 2005, 05:28 AM You added the unstable tree to the resources didn't you?
ummm, I uh...huh?
Curio April 3rd, 2005, 12:44 PM See BB post - #8 this thread.
Big Booger April 3rd, 2005, 13:32 PM See BB post - #8 this thread.
The fonts shouldn't act like that though. It worked fine on my setup...
???
Curio April 3rd, 2005, 16:43 PM Me too and I used the apt-get black magic incantation.
Perhaps something else is screwed up, remember the old saying about debian
"If it breaks you can keep both pieces."
Big Booger October 14th, 2005, 14:04 PM Updated this thread with the latest build links. :D
rik October 14th, 2005, 15:00 PM Glad you bumped this. Now that my initial hiccups have been overcome I am really liking Xandros.
efc October 14th, 2005, 18:55 PM Have you updated via XandrOS Network? Also, have you done an RPM install? The RPM is very easy with Xandros.
shadow_warez January 3rd, 2006, 04:37 AM anyone else run the business edtion of xandros? iv finally got it and the crossover works but the itunes is giving some funky probs, it will install fine in about 40 seconds is downlaoded and isntalled, i go to run it it takes a few seconds, loads, i load all my audio nad i see the song s on the play list, i go to paly them thiers no sound, so i restart the sound server, try again, same thing but this time the songs wont play, and thiers no sound for em, so i try the included media player it works perfectly, songs are playing and have no probs? just wondering if anyone else has tryed itunes in crossover?
shadow_warez January 3rd, 2006, 04:39 AM has anyone tryed installing nvidia linux drivers for the video and chipset? i have dled them but now that i know how to install em ill give em a shot tommrow,
PIPER January 3rd, 2006, 08:05 AM  :omg: :wtf:  :Puke: ....too aggravating for me....not enough time in my day or night for this ****......:D
efc January 3rd, 2006, 12:42 PM has anyone tryed installing nvidia linux drivers for the video and chipset? i have dled them but now that i know how to install em ill give em a shot tommrow,
I know that this is no help, but the default drivers worked fine with my ATI card. I did change the scan rate to 1024 x 768, 85 Herz.
shadow_warez January 3rd, 2006, 12:48 PM iv tryed but my monitor isnt going that high even though its a 19 in flat crt, from samsung, but ohh well not like i need it much higher till iget 3D acceleration in linux working,
rik January 3rd, 2006, 13:10 PM My nvidia and monitor drivers installed fine using XN. Does your card not showup?
efc January 3rd, 2006, 13:11 PM I just set the higher scan rate to make sure there would be no flicker.
You are using the business edition. I am using the free edition. Is there a real reason to shell out the money, especially since I don't intend to use Crossover?
Curio January 3rd, 2006, 16:16 PM Business edition includes 3 or 6 Months access to premium content on XN, the better version of the shell CD/DVD rw software and network browsing software - plus the Crossover Office. Whether that has any value depends on yourself, especially as just about everything on official XN can be got from other sources.
Nvidia drivers - used them loads of times and no problems. 3D acceleration in Linux is not much like 3D acceleration in Windows though, there just aren't many apps that use it.
shadow_warez January 3rd, 2006, 17:31 PM right now im using defualt version of the nvidia drivers, want to try get better performance for games on xn newtwork
shadow_warez January 4th, 2006, 12:08 PM im trying to install new apps, like amarok i got the suse rpm installed fine but i have no idea were it went i ran the commands and it says its installed and uptodate in the console, any idea were things go when thier installed via the rpm option in xn?
rik January 4th, 2006, 19:07 PM So does Amarok not showup in the Sound and Video section? Can you not start it from the Run box?
shadow_warez January 5th, 2006, 20:01 PM no it doesnt show up at all it shows limeware pro and other apps that are alien lol, but amarok wont show and wont install through nx because it says broken packages, plus has anyone else tried itunes? its till bugged and wont run lol,
rik January 5th, 2006, 20:38 PM Have a look at this thread http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=17402&highlight=amarok
Big Booger January 7th, 2006, 00:11 AM  :omg: :wtf:  :Puke: ....too aggravating for me....not enough time in my day or night for this ****......:D
Did you actually try installing it? Of course there will be a transition period where everything looks confusing, difficult and out of the norm... but after you cross that threshold, there's no going back. It's all sweet potato pie and shut my mouth. :)
