Ive heard that its possible to stick some usb ports for your network into an ethernet port in the back of your router. but i can't find a way of doing this cheaply. can anyone suggest any options i could try? (sorry if this is in the wrong category)

some routers are usb and ethernet ready. you're router would have to support this. there is no add-on that I know of to make this possible

I was always under the assumption that Ethernet was faster then USB.My Westell router/DSL modem combo has both USB and Ethernet ports to connect the modem to the PC but ive stuck with Ethernet for the above reason.

i mean so you can share usb ports over the ethernet connection. could you do this if they were attatched to the individual computers? (like sharing local printers)
