After reading this thread, I got nostalgic and broke out the LP's. I have to say that the first Van Halen album turned me from a socal "Beach Boys" guy to the (pardon the Star Wars reference) "dark side of the force".

I understand completely but I'm afraid that I was turned much earlier than that...Rush -Self Titled was the final straw but there had been others prior to that.

#1 for me is Pink Floyd's "Time".

As far as a purely "classic" - improvised progressive 1960's music standpoint goes, the combination of Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, Ric Grech, and Stevie Winwood (Blind Faith) is hard to beat
