Just my tempory setup til i burn my 15 gig of data which will be used for my perfect Windows Installation.

What can i say? I like the colour Aqua, dark themes do not interest me, they get me into bad moods, i must look at light colours to keep happy.

Well i could use just one post to reply to more then one person, but i find it respectful to allow a new post for each person/topic i'm replying too.

Sure it puts the post count up, so what (hehe), and it takes a weee bit more space, but it gets my message across much more easier/clearer and the topics are seperated for full intake for readers, one post at a time :D.

I could try another way of posting, but i don't think it will be as "Effective" as the one i got now ;)

Yeah thought so, i can always tell a Windows Blind theme, they are very rough and have bold darkended edges at every boarder/corner of the Windows, yuk.

I'm also a ICON on desktop lover, i don't like a clean desktop my self.

Just isn't Windows, i guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks, i simply love 3-4 rows of icons on my desktop, makes me feel like i'm more productive in my work. The amount of rows depending on the limitations of one's resolution.

I am also very excited at seeing naked women hiding behind icons, don't ask me why, i just do ;)

I see it this way, there are 3 levels of well known program access, each have their advantages and disadvantages, if all 3 are used, you can be a very effective person.

Listed in terms of the speed:

1 - Desktop, Icons on the desktop were the 1st and main use of opening programs in a flash, they are always in your face and are clearly marked and graphicly beautiful. (My fav)

2 - Quick Launch, same as above, but limited to space and have smaller icons, most people don't use the quick launch to it's full usage. And with True Launch Bar, this on it's own can completely replace the desktop way of storing shortcuts, but it's slightly slower while in menu's.

3 - Start Menu, having to wait for menu's to appear is it's worse part, i only use this for programs i only access once in a blue moon and my favourites menu ;)

I use all 3 for excellent cavourage of speed and access :D

everyone has a different style so u can customize and stuff.. I also put stuff i use everyday in the quick launch bar.. much easier :D

Dehcbad25
April 16th, 2002, 23:56 PM
Well, I use quick launch for programs I use often. I even put My documents there, but it is limited and I don't like more than four. About the start menu, I fell it opens very fast. Well, that is because I use W98 and W2K, so don't have all effects of XP. But my main reason not to use desktop icons is that I like to apreciate my wallpaper, and I would have all screen complete with icons. I play a lot video games, but not the same for more than 2 days consecutives, so imagine how fast I can get it full. since my first PC I use 1024x768 as resolution, which gives me plenty of space, but onc I decided to leave the icons. In thes than a week I had half full:D
and with XP is the point that the icons are extremely big. It really annoyed me that when I begun using XP, even they were in "small icons" setting, which is a third more than other windows version.
Finally, I think is a taste matter. I preffer to see the wallpaper, mostly if a have one like sedative one
:hide: :Peace:

GimieGimieGimie
April 17th, 2002, 07:42 AM
Yep, it's all down to taste, nothing else :)

As for my Start Menu comment, i like the slowness of XP's menu's, i was referring to the amount of mouse clicks needed compared to a single click on the quick launch for example.

Ecpercy , you can make the image look great and still make it small.. how you do this is paste the image in photoshop and then go to File > Save for Web or something
that will compress it real good, yet keeping the quality of the image fully intact :)

P.s. Welcome Styles ;) Enjoy ur stay

Argh, if this is the same Mandy Moore i think you're talking about then she looked so much hotter with the blonde hair and the youngish looks she had in one of her first music video's "I Wanna Be With You"

That video/song was goos hit, and what an ass she had in it! woooooah :D

05. Using Winamp Executables (read my tutorial for installing it here (http://www.babis.us/winxp10.htm) )
06. it's my own version of a dock.. I used the taskbar and centered the icons.
07. Most my tray icons are on autohide
08. Winamp skin is included in visual style package
09. Trillian skin (Microscopic (http://www.cubbie.de/microscopic) ) This is so small, that you get the most contact list area ;-)

thanks BB... rem how i used to always have compiled lists of things on msfn, well when it went down(msfn), it pissed me off, so I decided to keep my own compiled links, and I was like.. what the heck just get a domain and keep updating it everytime i found something cool.. and while at it share it with whichever community I'm bugging the hell out of hahahah ;-)

Now just customize it the way you wish...

here is what i did to rename the recyle bin..
Open up start menu > run > regedit
Locate the following key

My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}.

In the right pane, right-click on "Default" and then click "Modify". Change "Recycle Bin" name to anything u want... Click "OK"

Then exit

Last question, how did you make the quick launch icons large? did you use a program, or just use large icons? Whenever I tried using larger icons, it still made them small. Is this the dock hack? or is there a way to hack the windows quick launch bar?
Thanks for your help bro.
BB

babis
June 28th, 2002, 15:06 PM
the dock hack that everyone keeps talking about has nothing to do with mine..

there are so many variations to docks out there

Examples:
1. made in flash
2. using stardock products
3. made large icons on desktop and put a rectangular shape on the wallpaper for the icons
4. centered some icons on the taskbar
5. you have a MAC
6. so on..

well.. first of all
01. Right click on the Desktop
02. Select Properties
03. Move over to the Appearance Tab
04. Click Advanced button
05. Now in the drop down menu select icons
06. set the size (hmm.. not sure i think the max allowed without a hack was 64 or 72) Anyhow there is a reg tweak to make go higher

that's how u get large icons..

oh wait large icons on taskbar?
01. Unlock taskbar
02. right click on quicklaunch toolbar
03. Select View > Large Icons

You will need to get a program like Reshacker (http://rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker/) and open the file that is sitting in the tray with reshacker, (for example, you want to edit the sygate icon, you open smc.exe) then you go in there, and find the tray icon, and replace it with the one you want to use, and then after restarting it, you should see your new icon :D

well if you dont want to even have the dot there you can do this:

right click on the icon, select rename, hold down alt and press 0160 and release, presto you have a blank name.

That worked except when I mouse over it there is a bigger rectangle mark. The dot is completely invisible. Did I do something wrong maybe?

Yes sir it is Zero. I ported them over to the LINUX .PNG format. It took a while but I finally got them to work. Now if I can just figure out how to change the taskbar icons and the "startup menu" icons IE the KDE toolbar, I will be all set.

Linux is nice, I just need a damn driver for my sound card.

Just installed a new theme on my Mandrake 8.2 KDE windowed environment. I call it MandrakeXP. hehehe

What do you think? I wish there were a way to change the start button to reflect the work start, instead of go...

Replace the IE/crazybrowser toolbar icons? Can you do that Piaqt? Please tell me how. :D

piaqt
August 10th, 2002, 18:53 PM
1. Download resource hacker. There are posts elsewhere with the url. Or do a ggogle search for it.
2. Search \system32\ for all crazy browser dlls. For IE it's shell32.dll
3. Extract all the bitmaps. Save them with the same numerical names they have in the dll.
4. Save shell32 as <other location>\shell32.dll Save the bitmaps to the same place.
5. Modify/replace what you don't like. TSS2000.nl has some nice replacement bitmaps. (icons/shell32/silver_IE)
6. For the toolbar, it's bitmaps #204-207.

7. Do NOT make me nuts by being incompetent. Please. You have a brain. Use it.
7. Use your loaf, and I'll post how to replace a protected OS file.

Exactly what I meant by use your loaf. I'm self-taught. All I meant was, try and figure things out, and don't just throw up your hands and say, "I don't know how to do this."

The only way I've found to gain knowledge and experience is to try and figure things out yourself. Hit the KB. A LOT. Worked wonders for me.

YOu have to understand PIa, she is a mix between a pitbull and a sabertooth tiger... gotta watch out for her...
HEHEHE

She gave you some good directions on changing the icons and stuff in IE. Now I don't know if you can apply that or not to crazy broswer, but do keep us updated on your progress. And Lynch, pay no attention to Pia's comments, she means well LOL
YOu are welcome to ask whatever you want on here as well lynch, no matter how easy or difficult the question.

Thanks BB, i'm cool. I do appreciate the directions - though they seem a bit vague to me. I'm not going to attempt it again and screw up. I wish there was an icon tweak prog. that would take care of this. Anyway, I haven't seen any good "shell 32" replacements that appeal to me - yet.

Not to worry anybody!!! The king of stupid questions is back :D
I do a lot of stupid questions that could have been answered by just making a search in google. so never feel bad about doing the same.
I do preffer also to learn by myself. Actually doing it is the only way I learn. I am very bad at to studying. So practice is the best way for me to learn, but I just don't have the time anymore. I don't have the time to search for it or to try to do it, so I can only ask about it.
Another point I haven't been able to even understand the latest post here, so I am just reading in the side.
Also, if I don't ask, I might go crazy looking for something. For example everytime I search technet I can spend hours there, because if I am not sure what I am looking for, I get too many posible hits. And it is even worse with google. To look in google you have to know what you are looking for, or you might end up lose in a sea of sites :p
Which sometimes is good. I think that way I ended up here :D
This is a great place because I have learn a lot, and I can talk about tech stuff, which I can do much otherwise because I have no people around in the computer area. So I am the expert here, and I don't consider myself a very good expert. Good old BB knows a lot. I have been wanting to find a knowledge transfer device. It will help us a lot :p
He is a smart guy!!!
And reverend also, everytime he writes he writes the just answer.
Lynch you are welcome to keep asking questions ;)
I know Piaqt will keep answering too

lynchknot

Another point I haven't been able to even understand the latest post here, so I am just reading in the side.

Huh? You mean my post?

The reason I ask how to do something is because I tried to replace my shell 32 icons and I screwed up. I ended up having to reinstall XP and losing everything.
I would rather ask questions than to have to go through that again.
I have learned alot in 3.5 months from doing AND asking alot of questions.
Sometimes asking a person is better than researching it - at least if I don't understand something I can paraphrase it and it can be rephrased in a form that I would understand. Sometimes, while following instructions, they tell you to do something but they leave out HOW to.

No honest question is stupid..........

Dehcbad25
August 11th, 2002, 05:47 AM
well, I don't understand about shell32 icons, or whatever they are. By default I am scare of everything that is ^$%$#*32 or .dll, so I don't mess with the OS. Windows doesn't seen to like very much when I play around with this, and I am so tired of reformating my HD that I avoid dangerous moves :D
but I would love to learn about it. While I learn more, I don't brake it anymore (or I brake more some times):p

Hey guys (and girls) I have hear so many time that computer related people are boring because we get too much into PCs. Definetively (or whatever the pronunciation is [I need word spell check]) they haven't met us yet.
Well, actually I cannot talk seriuously about anything for more than 5 seconds.
but beign honestely serious, it took me 5 minutes to figure out the "O" :D :D :D
and not I cannot stop laughing when I think about it.
Sometimes the answers are so much in front of our noses that we cannot see them (and I don't have a big nose, I think);)
I believe computer people are the greatest race in the world. Yes, we are a different breed!!!:D Smart as hell, but clumsy. Hard concentrated in PCs but not in anything else. We play Quake III as it was the most serious task, but work as much relax and happy as possible (Hey talking about it, I saw a documental in Discoverer channel where they show programers at silicon valley running around in the chairs and playing guns that throw little balls: COOL!!)
Now, I don't know why it is so hard to find a woman in this field, or at least a woman that will accept it. Ohh yeahh, there are out there, but I don't know where.

PS: I still insist that is was true that I couldn't understand the "O". Should have explained with more details that is was done with only one hand. Should have see me trying to do it with both hands :p :D :p :D

Hey LK that one is a great theme also. I like the start menu most. but the taskbar is too big for my taste. If I could I would make it even smaller in mine, for that reason I had made it trasnparent.
Will you post the link for the theme???
I will put that for my second desktop.
The media bar is WMP 9, just minimize WMP and click in an empty space of the taskbar (if you find any) and in the tollbar section select Windows Media Player, and that is all. You have to have WMP 9 though

LOL! you used my DT as WALLPAPER! LOL! - you're kidding right?
If you want that WP i'll tell you where I got it from so you don't have to "line up your icons" LOL.

I took the car to Photoshop Elements and used the "sharpen" feature - i'm still not completely happy with it - if I didn't have to stretch it, it would look so much better.

lynchknot

Dehcbad25, the taskbar is normally small - I extended it so I can have large icons (so they would be recognizable) The theme is Chaninja's and there are 2 colors available here: Chaninja Blue
http://www.tss2000.biz/site_pages/style_themes.php
(scroll to the bottom of the page and use the search feature under "designer" will be Chaninja's name.)- also with
Crazy Browser all I have to do is use the wheel (middle) and click to minimize both the taskbar and the toolbar so only the whole screen shows.

I have never read so much pointless rambling in a forum thread in my whole life:D LOL
lynchknot the best thing to do whenever changing or tweaking system files is to always make a backup first
for example if I was going to make changes to my shell32.dll file, I would copy the original first and then change my copy file name to something like shell32.org or .bak

lynchknot: Hit the kb means go to the MS Knowledge Base (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO/) and search for answers to things. Also, you might subscribe to http://www.kbalertz.com. It's a daily update of knowledge base articles, customized to your preferences.

Again: I'm VERY sorry for the way I worded my response. It came out hostile, when I intended only wiseass. The only stupid question is the unasked one.

Re: shell32.dll: The stuff in IE's toolbar is from bitmaps, not icons. There are a lot of tutorials out there on how to do these things. Try Virtual Plastic (http://www.virtualplastic.net/). Excellent site; lots of tutorials, explanantions, downloads and links.

I did not know that was an AOL design  I try to stay far away from that evil empire. I use MSN for the time being because it's free for another 2 months. Actually MSN has been real good for me. No problems. In a couple of months, hopefully, i'll be able to buy speed!

I use that log on icon because I ran out of icons that are similar.

**update** I changed it for you - so you can get a good nights sleep! lol :D
