Stopping a Windows Update Installation

I've downloaded some patches for Win XP and it's trying to install but fails. Every time I start my PC it tries to install the patch and eventually my system grinds to a halt.

How do I delete the download?

try deleting your temp internet files. That may help.

I've deleted them. I want to stop the install completely.

My Computer> Properties> Automatic Updates> Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.
