I just did a search on the net for solar powered air conditioners and THIS (http://www.oksolar.com/products/air_conditioner.html) site came up. It looks really interesting, and economical. I mean air conditioners, fridges, and washers and dryers make up the largest items to use the most electricity in a home. I wished we could install this unit in our apartment. I am sure it would save mega bucks on the electric bill. :D

About the unit:

Super efficient evaporative cooler delivers cold air direct from a 40W solar module during peak daylight hours. Designed especially for smaller one or two room homes or trailers, this side draft unit will exchange the room air every 5 minutes in 600 square feet of living area.

The SC 1000 cooler performance is rated at 1000 CFM, PV direct at 2.2A. Consumes less than 1 gallon (3.8 litres) of water per hour. The SolarCool model features 3456 cubic inches of honeycomb evaporative pad media, chemically treated to resist hard water deposits, lasts 5 seasons before replacement. The SC 1000 is completely assembled and is constructed of galvanized steel with tan powder coated paint. Unit features a long-life 24VDC fan motor and water pump, protective fan outlet grill, brass float valve and wiring junction box. A larger PV module will extend the peak daytime operation. For extended cooling beyond daylight, the SCI000 can operate direct from a 24VDC battery as well, producing near 1400 CFM at 24 VDC, 3.3A, or use accessory converter for 2.2A operation.

Features:

* Complete factory assembled and tested
* Longer life over conventional coolers
* Lower water consumption - less than 3,8 litters/hour
* Lower temperatures with less moisture
* Removes dust, pollen and air pollution
* No maintenance - quiet operation
* Strong, lightweight and easy to install

Anyone have any experience with solar power and appliances? Just curious.

I was involved in a project a few years back that could qualify. A group of associates began researching a venture in 2001 that would provide air conditioner boosters that would be powered by solar panels with battery backup. The concept had promise but the project was doomed for many reasons. It was a build-in-a garage project similar to early days of computer sales.

It would use peltier chips to provide cold and heat to the coil in the air exchanger in a typical central air unit. It was not to replace the unit. Instead the normal compressor would kick in and run if the booster device could not keep up with conditions. The math indicated a power savings of 50%. The biggest drawback was the solar panels to run the system. They are expensive, large and ugly. It would require many years of savings to equal initial costs.

I know that their is a lot of research in peltier applications. I think that it is only a matter of time before some will prove viable.

There are many peltier products beginning to appear. Here is a project that does a fair job of describing what is possible. LINK (http://www.ata.org.au/articles/50esky.htm)

Your right but did u think about the price

Descriptions Price

100 CFM DC Evaporative cooler 675.00
100 CFM DC Evaporative cooler + 45Watts solar panels 869.00
100 CFM DC Evaporative cooler + 75Watts solar panels 1,024.00
100 CFM DC Evaporative cooler + 120Watts solar panels 1,239.00

Now thats pretty crazy, but if you think about the savings on the bill then I think its still worth it!

But your not gonna buy it now, cuz summer is finished, well actualy here its finish, its cold and the leafs are turning orange!

I gota be ready for the snow!! Now lemme go check on the internet for solar powered heaters :D
