1. Type about:config in the address bar, and hit enter.
2. Find browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs (type B to get there faster).
3. Change value to true.
4. Check out Tools>Options>Advanced and find the Tabbed Browsing header.
5. If desired, tick Force links that open new windows to open in:...a new tab for instance.
And now target=_new links will open in a new tab.
