View Full Version : µTorrent
Big Booger October 16th, 2005, 01:20 AM µTorrent is an efficient and feature rich BitTorrent client for Windows sporting a very small footprint. It was designed to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible while offering all the functionality expected from advanced clients. With BitTorrent, you can download files faster and contribute by sharing files and bandwidth.
Features: Written from scratch in C++ with efficiency in mind; Manages multiple simultaneous downloads; Smart bandwidth usage; File level priorities; Global and per-torrent upload/download rate limiting; Quickly resumes interrupted transfers; Universal Plug&Play (WinXP only);
Supports popular protocol extensions; Low memory footprint and decent speeds; Attractive Interface: When hunting for mini-BTclients, interface it's usually the first thing that goes out the window for the sake of filesize / processing. This is not the case with µTorrent. All information that I routinely check is represented (file listing, pieces, tracker details). This BitTorrent client seems to have all the best features of programs like Azureus or ABC but is under 100K of size ! No Install Required.
This release brings proxy support, experimental ipfilter.dat support (see the Settings section of the FAQ for details), new icons and many new features and fixes. It's available from teh download section or through the application's builtin auto-update feature.

ragnarok October 16th, 2005, 01:42 AM Yep, thats an Azureus knock-off. You might as well get that instead, its been around alot longer. Although I might take a look at it cuz the people of Azureus been adding too much crap, and its starting to take its toll on the cpu and memory.

And they've been updating it like an overworked hooker.

But does it support:
Feature: Experimental support for ipfilter.dat
;)
efc October 16th, 2005, 04:19 AM I don't know.
Big Booger October 16th, 2005, 05:02 AM µTorrent is a lot like bittornado. It's basic, but it works well and is being developed daily. I just started using it, and tried downloading Xandros 3.02 and it was moving at around 250KB/s. I like it.
I think if you like Bittornado efc, you'll love utorrent:
uTorrent's smallness.
I mean, its only 91kb. Uses almost no memory at all. You dont even install it - it's all in one small package. (you run it from the executable.. no files to install.)
hotmale October 16th, 2005, 12:37 PM How does µTorrent compare to BitComet? I want to know from someone who's tried them both.
The size of µTorrent is unbeatable, but since there's no installation, does it create too many additional files and registry entries consequently making it hard to uninstall?
Big Booger October 16th, 2005, 12:58 PM The only thing that this doesn't support is DHT.... but it will soon.
http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?t=82
Read the FAQ.
The program itself is a lot like bitcomet, only simplified. I runs from the executable... it is clean, doesn't clog your system...
It's designed by programmers who care more about how it works, than how it looks. And you can tell... it looks spartan, but in my opinion that is great.
One of the great features is the ability to create a new torrent thought I haven't tried that yet.
On my system downloading several files at a time, I get a 3.4K memory usage using utorrent.
If you like flashy effects, and sweet icons, and so on this is not the release for you.
If you want a no frills bittorrent app that gets the job done, it might suit your needs.
hotmale October 16th, 2005, 13:15 PM Thanks for the info. From the screenshot, it seems to do everything that I'd need, but I already have BitComet and I'm happy with it :) Though I might try µTorrent someday.

For now, bitcomet might be the better of the two.. considering it supports DHT, whereas utorrent doesn't yet...
:D But if you want to try something new, who knows it may grow on you.
Big Booger October 23rd, 2005, 05:05 AM It's here. Yes, that annoying bug where µTorrent would not start after an unclean shutdown has been fixed. Some small usability improvements were made. Also, ipfilter file is loaded correctly now. Go get it from the download (http://www.utorrent.com/download.php) section!
