View Full Version : How does Techzonez keep records?

Specifically, does it use piles and piles of RAM like Google and no hard drives?

And how long are posts kept?

everything is on a database server and the forum you see is just basically a GUI pointing and making calls to the database. this is in lamen terms though you would have to wait for richard or rev to get technical.

As phish said all the data is written to and stored in a database. The database is kept on a hard drive within our server.

There is no fixed timeline for posts.

Yup, when it gets full, I'll start having to write the posts down on paper and filing them away

Richard: Seriously, this time...I don't know how long Techzonez has been around, but my curiosity is bugging me. How does it work? Do you just have 1 humungous HD or have you somewhere along the line had to erase or just substitute a brand new drive. I mean how long does it take to fill up a HD.

A hard drive isn't going to get filled up by just a Forum Database.

Because no one, and I mean absolutely no one here told the truth, I feel compelled:

We have a scribe at TZ who puts it all in manually.

Well, Conan, maybe so...but if one keeps adding stuff and never removing it, any container fills up...now, you'd not be pulling my leg, would you? Or would you?

Reverend

but if one keeps adding stuff and never removing it, any container fills upYes, but if the container is large enough it will take years to fill it up. ;)

Point taken. So how big is your HD and do you have an idea as to the size of most posts? And how much of it is currently filled?

So many questions......

Yep! Computers and how they work...how things are done fascinates me. So does much of life for that matter.

Thanks, Rev. 145 MB is .18% of 80 GB if my math is correct. Sure ain't much! The figures really give a vivid picture of just how HUGE 80 GB is in terms of storage!

Hee hee hee, Rev, somebody asked how "Big" your HD was......

:omg:

I know, I'm ornery as cat dirt tonight!

Confusious say: "Tis not the size of a man's HD that matters, it's the warranty and how fast it runs!" :smoke:

Put that in yer book scribe! :D

True that 145 mb is small, but imagine how many websites there are on the internet.. Google has most of them indexed at around 8 billion.. so 8 billion x 100mb = OMFG a lot of HD space !!

Also, 80gb for the techzonez server, is that allocated for our use? or is that just was in on the server where TZ is installed? what other websites are on the same drive?

LOL... does that mean its running out of his home PC connected on broadband?! :p

Seriously, You and Richard are doing a great job with this server, with almost 100% uptime! It runs soo smooth, that gzip compression trick works well ;)

I guess if we cant do anything at the Library (cos BB booked 8 hours already), then we have to get it someplace ;)
