media 7.1 and avi files

I can't seem to get my avi to play.
they worked prior to the clean install i did w/ win2k.
I think I installed all the codecs...but avi's don't work.
suggestions?

Also make sure "video file" is selected in the drop down menu on the file types tab.
WMP > tools > options > file types tab.

If none of that works, try using the 6.4 player that is in the windows media player folder C:program files/windowsmediaplayer. It's the legacy player and I have found that it works great in most cases. Again try it only if the above solutions do not work.
