Re procedure Windows uses to install new programs

Often when I start to install a new program I see "please wait while the program configures Windows installer" or "deleting saved files". Can someone expand on all the steps involved here or refer me to a site that does?

I did a Google search but it was unsuccessful.

The latter is probably "deleting temporary (setup) files." Try this in the google search box:
