IBM, Chartered Semiconductor, Infineon and Samsung revealed this week that they have successfully created prototype versions of the first silicon-functional circuits and design kits for 45-nanometer low-power process chip technology. Wide production of chips using 45nm technology should be under way in about a year, the companies said.

An industry consortium that includes IBM (NYSE: IBM) Latest News about IBM, Chartered Semiconductor, Infineon and Samsung Latest News about Samsung said this week they plan to make available the first silicon-functional circuits and design kits for 45-nanometer low-power process chip technology.

The 45nm manufacturing process shrinks the gap between transistors on each chip further from 65nm and allows manufacturers to pack more transistors onto the devices. This makes possible more powerful chips that offer increased performance, improved memory and other advanced features for computers and a multitude of other electronic devices.

Now they must be putting those elves to work at the plants... a real sweat shop getting the space down to 45nm... luckily they have small fingers.

Right on, dudes! I can't wait to see what happens when the processors pass the point where they'll have to do something about tunnelling electrons messing up all the picture.

What I mean is, the processors can only get so small when being able to function using the same principles as they do now.

Enter the Quantum Computer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_computer)

:D Speed should go through the roof.

Yeah, it should, but not in Pentiums or Athlons :) You gotta make quantum computer from scratch. That's what, I guess, will stump some circuit developing minds out there.

Anyway, it's good news really, though I hope I wouldn't have to buy a new motherboard again. Those intel guys sure know how to make you spend money on an upgrade!
