What would I use one for? I've been reading up on them and I believe they would allow me to access different computers from my desktop.

Is this a more robust version of VPN software, so that my bf could accedss the network through a kvm switch rather than VPN software?

I've been thinking of putting a server in the attic as I have 2 PC's and a latop and hopefully a 4th computer after Christmas.

I use one to control 2 PCs and it cuts the clutter! But you should be wary... cable lengths can cause more clutter than they're worth.

Also if you do get one, make sure it supports sharing 1 mic and a speaker set as well. (I had to take my first KVM back because of this).

The KVM I bought supports up to 4 devices at one time. I love it. One keyboard, mouse, speaker, mic, and monitor on several PCs. (I think it even supports Mac/PC/Linux!)...

If you are going to run the KVM distances make sure that the cable length matches the distance between the two PCs. (the one I bought had 2 meter cables because the PCs I am using are in the same room).

I think I paid around 8000 yen for my KVM.. so they are very affordable.

True but as with my setup,I have a wireless mouse and keyboard (usb kvm).And a usb hub to connect the printer and scanner.:D

As zipp51 said in the post above, you can use wireless mouse and keyboard. There is one thing I would do different if I were buying today. I would buy a KVM that includes audio cables. I actually don't use KVM. I remote desktop into my 'server' computer. The only issue I have with that is if it needs to reboot, the cables need to be attached. For that, I just have some dummy cables hooked up.

I would read up on KVM switches if that's the route you're going. I've had particular problems with some and others have just been awesome.

This post got me curious about a wireless version of a KVM. So I did a little googling, and this is what I found:

Quite expensive ($900 US) but still very cool. And it sure beats running the cables all over the place.
