Stephen Hawking states that in order for humanity to guarantee survival we must colonize other planets. And these planets must be outside of our own solar system to guarantee the survival of our species.
A nuclear war or collision with an asteroid or other spacial body could wipe us out. We can improve the odds that humanity will survive simply by spreading out and doing what comes natural to mankind, explore, colonize and thrive.
