A U.S. submarine and Japanese ship have collided in the Arabian Sea, Kyodo News agency reported Tuesday, citing an unidentified government official.
The submarine struck a commercial vessel, Kyodo said, adding that the official was quoting information from the U.S. side. There was no immediate word about injuries.
The information was passed to Japan's Foreign Ministry shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday (1900 Monday), Kyodo said.
Officials at Japan's Defense Ministry and Ministry of Foreign Affairs were not immediately able to confirm the report. The U.S. Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, also had no immediate comment.

This is the second time this has happened in the past few years. You would think as large a space as the ocean is that these types of collisions wouldn't happen.
The last time a US sub smashed into a Japanese ship, several school children were drowned and the ship was sunk. I hope there were no injuries or deaths this time.
Do submarines not have some kind of collision avoidance sonar or radar system like in airplanes?
