I have two old laptops which I wish to get rid of. Both have problems and so are not worth giving away, hard drive problem with one and Fan problems with the other.

What steps apart from formatting them should I take before slinging them out? Are they any companies in the UK that take them and get rid of them for you?

personally bubba I would not just reformat. I would take the hard drive out and take some aggression out with a hammer to the drive. This is the only way to make sure your data is safe.

There are 3rd party software that will do a DOD low level format on the drives but if your gonna trash them why take the chance.

A 1/4 inch drill works wonders on hard drives. 3 holes - data gone.
