I am running the free version of Kaspersky on my computer. I downloaded the free version of AVG 7.5 also, not to have it running as Kaspersky is, but just to have it as another virus scanner when I download something. First I exited Kaspersky and then downloaded AVG, and got the updates. Then I went into msconfig and made sure AVG was not going to load when I started the computer. Then I did a reboot. Kaspersky loaded as it should, and AVG did not. I was able to connect to the internet OK, but could not get my e-mail from Outlook Express. I eventually got the message that it timed out. I tried this several times, but could not get my e-mails. I then did a system restore to get rid of AVG and everything was fine. I could then connect to the internet AND get my e-mails also. This was about a week ago. Tonight I downloaded AVG again, and again I was unable to get my e-mails. Had to do a restore again to get rid of AVG. It looks like Kaspersky and AVG don't get along well ?? Any suggestions ?? I guess I could try another free AV in place of AVG. Thanks in advance, Mike

Kaspersky is pretty top notch, I don't think you need another anti-virus to back it up. You can do the online scans instead of installing another program:

I agree with what Conan said :)

But of coarse if you feel the need for another AV use BitDefender Free (http://www.bitdefender.com/site/view/Download-Free-Products.html), its on-demand only and better than AVG.

If you do use another AV, make sure to disable KAV real time protection when you scan with the other AV.

Thanks Conan and FastGame for the replies. Another question--I know the fuLL version of Kaspersky is very highly rated, but I have the FREE version that is associated with AOL. I have read that the FREE version is not as complete as the full version. Am I comprimising my protection with just the FREE version, or does the FUll version just have more bells and whistles that really do not add any more protection ? Thanks again.

I have used AdAware from LAVASOFT for many years. It has just been a habit to scan for AdAware every day or two.

Now I believe there is something better. It is AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/31/us/crp/0). It is free, updates itself, and provides protection against infection.

How does it compare to spybot?

I am still using Spybot S&D scans every three or four days. The only thing that I have replaced is Lavasoft AdAlert.

Security programs that I use:
Kaspersky Free version
Windows Defender
Spyblaster
AVG Anti-Spyware
Spybot S&D
All behind a NAT router

That is on my XP machine. The Xandros computers use the build-in anti-virus program.

I have Avast Home Free, it works very well, with many different resident programs to monitor network, email, IM, web etc :)

I find Spybot a lot better than Lavasoft!
