View Full Version : Is there a best anti-virus/malware program?

I want to protect my home PC. I don't mind spending a little cash on a proper program, but I would want something which doesn't cripple my system or reduce performance. For a single PC, what's great? I want to protect against viruses as well as any random crap from the internet. Any other tools are a bonus.

What's good?

If you run XP/Vista in LUA (Limited User Account) and only download files from trusted sites you would be safe without AV-Antispyware.

The free AV-AntiSpyware work just fine, they also run light.

AV's: AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic, Avast, AVG

AntiSpyware: SuperAntiSpyware, AVG Anti-Malware

If I were to pay for something it would be AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium, NOD32, Kaspersky, Norton.

If you're worried about system slow down (IMO the AV's I listed don't slow things) turn off real time protection and scan things on-demand.

Try the Limited User Account, its secure ;) Its not bad at all

The new Norton isn't like the older versions, it runs without slowing things down. It also has one of the best detection rates, least false positives of all AV's.

I use Avast, its never let me down ;)

I run Windows Xp pro SP2 and Media Center 2005 both using Avast Free,Zone Alarm free,Spybot S&D,and Ad Aware 2007 and seems to do a great job keeping my systems clean and running smooth.

And Comodo for a good free firewall.

Using Avast with Vista. It doesn't rank up there in the top AV's but I have no complaints. I've been using it for the past 3 years at the very least.

I just ran across this chart which might be helpful in making a decision. The interesting thing to me was that every one of them were rated 100% effective. The differences in ratings were in other areas.

Here's an AV comparative site that many security boards recommend: http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Click on the comparatives link and check out the online results and retroactive results (retro tests heuristics)

I've been trying the free version of threatfire (http://www.threatfire.com/) to supplement my AV. It seems good.
