A nationwide poll organized by the BBC to find the Greatest Briton in history has just finished after 3 months of voting.

Here's the Top Ten:

1 Churchill 27.9%

2 Brunel 24.1%

3 Diana 14.2%

4 Shakespeare 6.9%

4 Darwin 6.9%

6 Newton 5.2%

7 Elizabeth I 4.5%

8 Lennon 4.3%

9 Nelson 3.1%

10 Cromwell 2.9%

As a non-Brit, I may view the results from a slightly different perspective. I'm also certain that if a similar poll was to be taken here, the results would reflect the same types of person's. Of course you would substitute presidents for kings and queens.

The interesting thing to me is how current or recent entertainment people can rate so high. People like David Bowie and Paul McCartney.

It is hard for me to believe that 75 years anyone will know who David Bowie is, yet everyone will still know the contributions to humanity made by Newton, Darwin, Faraday and Hawkin. These people changed the way we understand the world.

Can't believe if Di was alive she'd have even made the list. Public opinion is moulded by the press...and in the press she went seamlessly from Queen Of Tarts (sic) to Queen Of Hearts in one night...how soon we forget (my favourite is "a woman who, if her IQ were five points lower, would have to be watered daily."):
