"Access denied...Cannot Delete"

Hi Everyone and Anyone:

I occasionally get this subject message when I try and delete some files. I sometimes manage to deal with it, but I would sure appreciate a bunch of tips as to how I can delete what I want to delete when I get this message. I mean...what do YOU do...and are there 2-3 different things I can try?

1] Could be that it is a system file and if you delete it you will have problems with XP and maybe kill it all together...:msncry:

2] Could be that the file is in use by a program that is running and XP will not let you delete it while it is being used. If this is the case you should see what programs you have running and see if you need them. If not close the program and uninstall the entire program. After uninstalling the program you can delete the directory that it is in, of course making sure that this is the only item in the directory and you will not be loosing other important files....

that was a problem awhile ago the way I got around it was del it in dos....but have you updated to sp1 I thought that was fixed.

wumply,is it mainly media files that you get the message with?

The reason i ask this is because there is a known issue with the way certain files are cached by the applications that are used to open/play them.

The easiest way to delete them is just rename to a different extension. (ignore the warning message)
i.e change a .mp3 file to a .txt file

You should then be able to delete them.
