Here's a fix for Windows Messenger & DirectX 9 posted by Neowin.net.
Hi guys! I know theres a bunch of people out there suffering the same problem as me after upgrading to DX9 under Windows XP: Windows Messenger goes screwy! Well, I've since figured out a temporary solution until Microsoft fixes the problem, so I thought I'd share! After upgrading to DX9, Windows Messenger takes a while to load and/or will intermittently freeze every 30 seconds or so for a few seconds before returning back to normal! for more info click on the link below:

As always use the fix at your own risk and only if you have problems with directX and windows Messenger.
