I have 768 Meg of RAMBUS on a Intel D850MV system board and it will not use all of the memory for some reason. It will not use over 300 meg. If I turn off the page file the system will lock up when it goes over 300 meg. Any ideas?

bad stick of ram?
Virus?
Bad Config?
Got me on this one. I am anxious to see the answer to this one.

What programs are you opening/running in the hopes of utilizing all of your memory? I would imagine Photoshop would be a good program to accomplish that. I'm not really sure though what you would have to do to max out 768mb of RAM.

At this time I am using 204 Meg with just normal operation. 37 process. I use PSP 7 instead of Photoshop but yes that is correct, this is where I want the system to use more ram.
I have switched the memory in the slots in an attempt to see if there is a bad stick of ram but still the same.... I run NAV ever day and have found no virus. Configuration? What can I do there that would be different?
By the way I have clean installed XP at least 4 times over 6 months and it is always the same..............

By configuration, I meant moving the ram in different slots? Is the ram all the same brand? All the same speed?
Do you have another board to test it with to see if the ram is able to run at full useage?
This has stumped me.

One main piece of information missing from the original problem deals with the OS. Operating systems handle memory allocations differently. If you are using Win 98 or SE, or Win ME check out the memory allocation solutions privided here (LINK). (http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/memory/vcache98.html#768mb)

XP Home is the OS.......

Must be hardware related then cuz we all know XP is Top's !
Try memtest 86 Tinker, it's one of the best ram testers out , most all the OC'ers use it....

Thanks FG. I am running it now........

Have you tried to change the positions (banks) of memory sticks to make sure the new memory is good?
As an AMD type, I don't use RAMBUS. However, I have had PC133 memory that would not work when installed in one bank yet work fine when it was removed and installed in another. No logical reason - but it happened.

Thanks efc, I have tried that and no luck........

Did that new memory work in any bank?

Well 6 hours later and 23 passes no memory errors. This using memtest86...........
After rebooting XP loaded drivers for a B: drive I do not have.
I think it is the System board...:(

Send it back RMA style. That is what I suggest.

Tinker was that board letting MemTest use all your ram or was it doing the same thing and using 1 bank & partiial of the second like it does with the problem you describe ? if so then that board has a bad controlier or the drivers are junk.....
I think maybe BB is right....you have top notch equipment and you shouldn't have all the problem's you've been going through lately.....

Well I just bought an ASUS P4T-533C system board. I just got done after 6 hours plus setting up everything again. I used the same CPU and Memory as before. I will be able to see if it is the old Intel D850MV system board in about 4 Weeks.
If this proves out I will be hounding the outlet where I bought the system board from for a credit, and if not them then Intel.

forgive me for butting in but I have a question....
I have an ABIT motherboard that uses the Rambus RAM as well. For my motherboard, I have to have the same size sticks of memory in both slots. By saying you have 768MB of RAM, I am assuming you are using 512 stick and a 256k stick. I would refer to your motherboard manual to see of this is the case.
Also, on my motherboard, If I utilize only 2 memory slots, I have to use CRIMM chips in the other 2 memory slots otherwise funky stuff happens (don't remember what exactly what happens...).
Just some ideas for you.

yep thats right
rambus has to be specific for the memory.
check the manual

That is correct stripe, you must install the RAMBUS in pairs. I have two 256mb for a subtotal of 512mb and two 128mb for a subtotal of 256mb. Now add the subs and you get 768mb total. All four slots are filled so I would have to remove the two smaller ones to add more RAMBUS, if that is what I wanted to do....
As well with an ASUS system board you have to match A1 & B1 as well as A2 & B2. By looking at the attachment you will see that the pairs do not go next to each other. On the Intel D850MV the pairs are next to each other......

Well it is not the System Board. The same problems just occurred as before.........:msnmad:
I guess a new CPU next?
This has happened with 2 different OS, XP Home and XP Pro.
Now 2 different System Boards.
Looks like a new CPU to see if it happens again.........
Danm computers are going to put me in the poor house....

I think it might be your ram. try to upgrade it. Or try 2 sticks by themselves.. then try the other two and see if you can reproduce the problem you are having.

http://www.zmicro.com/download/d850mv.pdf
section 1.7.1 through 1.7.3
of the pdf manual...what mhz is your mem? ECC?
see bullet 4 in seciton 1.7.3
so check your speed of mem and density and what bank has what

insightechdude may have stumbled upon the golden goose here. I definitely now think it is a memory config/damage/compatibility issue now that you have replaced the MOBO and are still getting the same results.

Welcome insightechdude. Post often as we love a challenge. Enjoy your stay..
Thanks for the .pdf, I have read that 30 times over the last 6 months trying to figure out this problem. I thought I had it narrowed down to the Mother Board........
Yea BB must not be the system board, go figure..
I am trying 2 sticks of 256 or 512mb at this time and C-RIMM in the other spots.. We shall see.........

Tinker - I don't know if you solved this problem. Today I ran into a small memory test program.
