Intelligent Auto-Fix

Coffee and LangaList twice a week first thing in the morning
when the brain is awake...really great.

Here's an interesting piece of software that many of your
readers might want to look at and use, it's free and easy to
work with: Daisy 2- An intelligent auto-hotfix utility for
Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP. Daisy is a program that reviews
your system for service pack and OS levels, determining what
hotfixes the OS and applications need, and downloading and
installing them in a correct and consistent manner. It checks
that the hotfixes installed on the system are installed
correctly.

It was written by Marc DeBonis, Lead Systems Architect,
Virginia Tech Microsoft Implementation Group.
Documentation and download available at
http://vtmig.w2k.vt.edu/ .

It would appear that this offers a better alternative to the
Windows Update 'feature' that you have covered before. Would
love to hear what you think.---Bryan

Thanks, Bryan. The direct link to the "Daisy" page is one level down in
the above site, at http://vtntug.w2k.vt.edu/daisy.html .

Windows Update itself can be problematic, as can the updates it offers.
Alternatives like this, plus third-party sites like
http://www.bigfix.com and even Microsoft's own separate "Baseline
Security Analyzer" (a new version released just last week, and still
free, is at http://snurl.com/ksb or http://tinyurl.com/dxnv ) can help
ensure that your system really has all the patches, updates, and
bugfixes it needs!

Hi BB,

Thank you for sharing this utility and the link. I will give it a try because it seems useful.

Regards,
Donna

This maybe helpful if you cannot access the MS update site, or your automatic update utility is not working correctly :D

I haven't tried this out personally, as my auto update is working fine. But if I ever have an issue with auto update I will be sure to give Daisy 2 a try.

:D

I never 'auto update' anything. I prefer to do the updating on my own for the major reason of knowing what the update is and what's it for. Especially from M$.

The deal with MS autoupdate is simple. It downloads the updates as they come out. Then a balloon pops up asking you what you want to do. I usually click details and check out what the update is for and then I decide whether to update or not.

It also has a reminder feature that will let you put off the update for up to 2 days.

If you don't want to do the update at all, simply uncheck it, and close the balloon. :D

Seems to work great for me. And as soon as a new update is released I know about it through the balloon popup :D
