View Full Version : Floppy not read lynchknot July 16th, 2003, 05:39 AM Hello, is it possible that my floppy drive is not working because it is turned off in bios? I put a floppy in there and the light comes on but nobody is home............... SupaStar July 16th, 2003, 06:47 AM I guess it's possible, but you would have had to disable it manually. Chances are that if you disabled it in the BIOS, it wouldn't show up in Windows though. So the question is, does it show up in My Computer? zipp51 July 16th, 2003, 11:36 AM Could be the ribbon cable is on backwards or the pin 1 is not lined up with the red stripe side.Or the connections are loose. Thor July 16th, 2003, 12:35 PM Originally posted by zipp51 Could be the ribbon cable is on backwards or the pin 1 is not lined up with the red stripe side.Or the connections are loose. Sounds, as zipp51 said, as if the cable is backword. Stripe July 16th, 2003, 13:00 PM I would agree with Zipp...loose connections... lynchknot July 16th, 2003, 17:59 PM Aren't the cable ends notched as well as the jack they attach to? Under properties it says that this device is working properly. Thor July 16th, 2003, 18:08 PM The floppy is the one device that can be hooked up backword. Usually when that happens the light stays on and the drive can't be accessed. Look At Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22Floppy+light+stays+on%22&spell=1) at the myriad of querys about the floppy light staying on and no access and the vast majority of answers point to the same thig,........backword connection. lynchknot July 16th, 2003, 18:47 PM The only time the light goes on is when I click the icon in my computer and it says to insert disk into drive A when there already is one in there. Thor July 16th, 2003, 18:56 PM Ahhh........well, in that case try what I did just recently for a 'sticky' drive. Keep inserting/removing the disc for a period of time and see if that does anything. Make sure the disc is dropping in correctly. That's after checking the connections anyway. It's obviously is not reading that the disc is there. Mine did the same thing and that's what fixed it. It, in my case, may have something to do with my using the floppy rarely lately. Reverend July 16th, 2003, 19:08 PM LK,does this happen with all disks or just the one? Have the Disks been formatted under XP,or were they formatted using another OS. Pop a blank Disk in and right click the floppy icon, then select Format. When the format is complete copy some files to it.Then take it out and then put it back in. Can you now read the contents of the floppy? Sometimes floppies formatted under a different OS cannot be read by XP. lynchknot July 16th, 2003, 19:11 PM With any disk blank or not. When I click format the light comes on then it says there is no disk in drive A. Thor July 16th, 2003, 19:43 PM That's the exact problem I had. Either the read arms were sticking or the disc wasn't seating properly. Either way repeated inserts/releases fixed the problem. Wait lemmee check...................................... ......................................................................... ............................................................................ ............................................................................ ............................................................................ .....I'm slow;) .........yep, still works. lynchknot July 16th, 2003, 20:14 PM I took the cover off and slammed it in there - hehe, it works now - :D Reverend July 16th, 2003, 20:22 PM Originally posted by lynchknot I took the cover off and slammed it in there - hehe, it works now - :D A useful technical tip: If in doubt......give it a clout. :p Thor July 16th, 2003, 20:48 PM Muscle power!!!!! Way to go!!!:p zipp51 July 16th, 2003, 21:19 PM Damn cheap a** floppy.Thor just invented a game called "whack a floppy".LK have you tried uninstalling the device in device manager and restarting windows?Just a thought but I tend to agree that it is a stuck drive wheel.Remove the drive and underneath you will see a round free spinning extension.Turn it around a few times with your finger,it should spin freely without binding. Then slam a floppy disk in and spin it.You should feel resistance as the floppy engages with the drive wheel and you will hear the floppy spin as you turn it.This way you know that it has engaged and windows should report a disk in drive. If this is happening and you still get the error, then you probably need a new floppy drive. efc July 16th, 2003, 21:39 PM I have always considered a hammer a precision instrument. There is one in my computer repair tool box. lynchknot July 17th, 2003, 00:35 AM Hey I know, I have a sledge hammer - maybe I should pound it a few times on the right side - knock the bugs out. cash_site July 17th, 2003, 01:47 AM knock the bugs out. I use BugSpray for that LOL, and is a nice lemon scent too. I keep a small hammer in my top-pocket for highly technical and precision works ;) LOL
