View Full Version : TCP/IP HELP! lynchknot September 25th, 2003, 07:28 AM I have no internet connection with any browser. The cable works - just the PC does not. I pugged this PC into the cable and it works but my PC does not. anyone know what is going on?????? SupaStar September 25th, 2003, 08:45 AM Firewall settings? Have you fiddled with them recently? Stripe September 25th, 2003, 13:42 PM I would power down the PC and then unplug the cable modem and let it sit for a minute. Then plug it in and wait for all the lights to come on. Once all the lights are on, turn on the PC. If you still don't have internet connections, then look at the TCP/IP settings. Make sure that they are on "Obtain an IP address Automatically" lynchknot September 25th, 2003, 15:08 PM hello. I turned firewall off and made sure the box "obtain IP automatically" was checked and it still does not work. I plug the cable into this other PC and it works. lynchknot September 25th, 2003, 16:43 PM OK if I turn firewall off I can use IE and Opera but it won't allow all links. Firebird does not work no matter what. IE can surf but many links are slow or frozen. I had to go a round about way to post this. (had to go to my profile and click last post). NAV update will start but freeze. I cannot retrieve any mail with any client with firewall off. I just stays stuck on "checking for messages" without the progress meter moving at all lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 00:20 AM Well can someone help? I realized that Opera cache's pages so it appeared that it was working but I could not go beyond the page that was showing. I spoke with upper level tech at Comcast and they said it sounds like TCP/IP is corrupt and there is nothing they can do. As it is, IE can get to the front page of this forum but that is it. It can surf only a few pages. Email programs do not work at all. Most links in browser fail. I don't know what else to do, short of a format. I tried repair two times with no positive results. Is there a way to repair TCP/IP? egghead September 26th, 2003, 00:27 AM i usually uninstall my firewall if i know for a fact that my internet works on another computer i would click on the start menu and select run type cmd in the window type ipconfig see if you can see your Connection-specific DNS Suffix if it is in there you have a configuration problem go to internet explorer and select tools/internet options/connection/lan settings and uncheck prxy if it is checked. You could also go into control panel and select your network connection and uninstall all your network tcip and re-install it from there kinda worried to bring you to these places as you can stop your access to the internet but you should be there now. lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 01:08 AM Im able to ping in cmd but none of the browsers/email work. It won't let me Uninstall TCP/IP lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 01:29 AM now i'm able to post this with IE but most links do not work for any website. Still no browser or emal works. If I hit back and forth and refresh or go a few times, I can edit this post as i'm doing now Big Booger September 26th, 2003, 01:48 AM How can I Re-Install TCP/IP on my Windows XP computer? When viewing the list of components for a network interface, you may notice that the Uninstall button is disabled when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected. In Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of the operating system; therefore, it is not possible to uninstall TCP/IP in Windows XP. In extreme cases, reinstalling the Internet Protocol stack may be the most appropriate solution. With the NetShell utility, you can now reset the TCP/IP stack back to a pristine state, to the same state as when the operating system was installed. The NetShell utility (netsh) is a command-line scripting interface for the configuring and monitoring of Windows XP networking. This tool provides an interactive network shell interface to the user. In Windows XP, a reset command is available in the IP context of the NetShell utility. When this command is executed, it rewrites pertinent registry keys that are used by the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) stack to achieve the same result as the removal and the reinstallation of the protocol. SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCP\Parameters\ Command Usage: netsh int ip reset [ log_file_name] To successfully execute the command, you must specify a log file name where actions taken by netsh will be recorded. For example, typing either of the examples that are listed in the "Command Samples" section later in this article at a command prompt would reset the TCP/IP stack on a system and record the actions that were taken in the log file, Resetlog.txt. The first sample creates the log file in the current directory, while the second sample demonstrates the use of a path where the log will be created. In either case, where the specified log file already exists, the new log will be appended to the end of the existing file. Command Samples netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt That above tells you how to reinstall TCP/IP... you cannot uninstall it unfortunately. :P Have you tried a system restore? Have you tried : start, run type IPCONFIG /RENEW or start, run, type IPCONFIG /RELEASE Big Booger September 26th, 2003, 01:49 AM TCP/IP repair help: http://www.neotechcc.org/xp/tcpiprepair.htm That site shows you how to try to repair the connection. egghead September 26th, 2003, 01:54 AM i wonder if you have a trojan that is doing a DoS attack lynch? sorry off topic.... You never know. hope you get it going. lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 02:31 AM If I have Sygate on, I cannot connect at all. If it is off only some links work. I took a look at sygate's traffic log and it is filled with almost all incoming blocks! What this hell is going on????? Oh yeah, I tried both methods BB but still have problems. I will run NAV since trojan remover no longer works for me. lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 03:03 AM This IP is showing up alot - I don't want to turn off my firewal too much but I have to - to post 172.183.168.29 lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 03:56 AM http://www.techstarcomputers.net/~sighost/sigs/help.gif Comcast will be here in the morning.................. lynchknot September 26th, 2003, 05:41 AM Whoever this is -- they are going nuts now - I pinged him back then his aol and his IP are now visible - it's coming from philidelphia. I wish that trial ping scanner was still active - I used neotrace which, I guess, is not good for sending continuous pings. Big Booger September 26th, 2003, 10:09 AM ur being dosed and it is probably by some old granny who has no idea it is happening.. so don't do it back until you find out what is happening. cash_site September 26th, 2003, 10:37 AM Yep BB got it... sounds like a DoSer! Hope its not RIAA... oh no, they're on too our WATZE pile... need to eat/destroy all my mp3 evidence LOL Seriously... u should ask Comcast if they can give u another IP address for ur cable... then report that ip 172 one, to comcast, and hopefully FBI will get them! Conan September 26th, 2003, 13:23 PM Originally posted by lynchknot I wish that trial ping scanner was still active - I used neotrace which, I guess, is not good for sending continuous pings. Actually you can configure it to ping continuously and even vary the size of the packets sent. But I agree with Boogs that you shouldn't retaliate at the moment. lynchknot September 27th, 2003, 02:47 AM Well, i'm back. After spending 2 hrs here, Comcast could not figure out what was going on. Sygate started to block everything - even when it was allowed. I ended up formatting - so now I lost everything - because, as usual, I forgot to back up most everything. I'll have to get wasted and pick up a key and get started.................. Big Booger September 27th, 2003, 03:06 AM Warning. In the future Lynch, don't install every single application you can get your hands on.. That is just a word of caution. I think some of that crap you can do without.. Especially things that start to serious change the function of XP.. like things that change the right click options... Also be wary when making a change.. create a restore point before doing so. Hopefully whatever you changed can be undone. Also CREATE A DISK IMAGE of your newly reformatted drive, before you start adding too much crap.. so the image is small and easy to install. :D Just a few ideas for you. Unless you want to screw it up again, and have to reformat again, and go through that process again. :P lynchknot September 27th, 2003, 03:26 AM hehe, I don't know why people think I have a ton of stuff on my PC. I really don't. The only thing I had that changed right click was "move-to" and "copy-to" - and that has been on my pc a long time. The "tech" believes that someone got into my pc. I was getting hammered and the only way I could post anything was to turn my firewall off. I noticed that there was a Sygate pop-up saying that something has changed with telnet and I made the mistake of allowing it. I went back in logs to find out the IP was the same as what I was being hit with. I then went to services and found that it was disabled but started at the same time. The only apps that I have installed are ones that I use often. Most of them are well known. If you were to remove games and music, etc. my drive C would probably amount to only 15-20 gbs - if even that. LOL is that all...hmm I have most every major app ta do just about anything that can be done on a PC and my C: drive is only 5.8gig and that includes a bunch of pic's (large RAW images) I haven't moved over to the storage partition.... Good luck on the new install Lynch, the hardest part is *to not* put all the junk back on... Oh BTW you only need one Anti-Virus program..hehe Conan September 27th, 2003, 15:21 PM Originally posted by lynchknot my drive C would probably amount to only 15-20 gbs - if even that. My C Drive is only 6.24 gig.;) lynchknot September 27th, 2003, 16:27 PM "you people" :p I now have just about all I need and i'm at 6.02gb. :D FG, I only have 34 items in my add/remove - how can you only have 5gb! Maybe you don't have office and/or photoshop? (my 2 largest files) Maybe my extra language files contribute? *edit - oh yeah, Fastgame you don't count - your are download challenged - - :p lynchknot September 27th, 2003, 17:09 PM opps! emptying trash, moving download folder to D, and running disk clean up brought me back down to 4.52gbs - I NEED  to download more stuff!
