SupaStar January 16th, 2005, 11:14 AM Everyone should remove Norton - hooray for Norton Remover!
Disagree with you there. Hasn't let me down yet :D
Curio January 16th, 2005, 15:25 PM Though to be honest if it did let you down you probably wouldn't know as most virii do little to actually harm your machine they usually just slow it down a bit.
I regularly test virus scanners with real virii that I get from my infected customers and trust me Norton is not that great - especially when it comes to Trojans and Adware which it often either will not detect at all or detects then fails to do anything about. You need a large armoury and a flexible attitude to deal with all the crap that is out there, there is no one product that catches all. I repaired a mans laptop the other week and he said he had no antivirus and had never had a virus, I found 140+ infected files with 7 different virii. He only brought it in to get a VPN set up.
Thinking you are safe is not the same as being safe.
Coming to you from FireFox 0.7 on Knoppix STD 1.0 - live and direct - HDDs on 'read only' try infecting me now you lowdown internet malware peddling scum. :)

This is all true and I agree with you for the most part, however i deem the software to be doing it's job if it keeps my PC running, which at this point it has. Don't for a second think that I am president of the "I Love Symantec" Fan Club, because I'm not. I think NIS2004 was a resource-intensive piece of shite and I removed it not long after it was installed.
And sure there are alot of other factors which could have influenced whether or not I would have got a virus in the past, but one thing's for certain, when almost everyone I know got Blaster and I didn't, I kind of felt left out :(
That's why I continue to use Norton :)
MSNwar January 16th, 2005, 23:24 PM They are all good. The key is safe PC practice IMHO. The majority of people get a virus by downloading it via email and some even get them when they visit a questionable site. The later being rare. Once in a while someone will pick up a nastie from a disc borrowed from a friend.
I recommend only downloading email to your hard drive if you have to. Web mail is much safer and quality web hosts use email filters. So the chance of a virus is minimal if you use web mail and delete unwanted mail as you go.
Adware, poof I could care less. I like naked girls anyway ;) Quick scans with all the anti-adware progs do the fix and lke I said "I could care less about adware." Not to say I do not clean it.
Firewalls. Well, lets just say anyone that has ever slid in never came back, lol.
Big Booger January 17th, 2005, 10:19 AM The only real problem I have with Norton is getting all the crap that it installs out of your computer should you decide to delete it... I mean it is buried in your OS. Symantec this, norton that.
I had a hard time. And thanks to a long term member Jackpot who hosted/created (?) this remover it can be taken care of.
lewell January 17th, 2005, 11:50 AM so what the recommended replacement for norton antivirus?
FastGame January 17th, 2005, 12:26 PM so what the recommended replacement for norton antivirus?
I like Avast (http://www.avast.com/) the Home Edition is free.
I've been a long time Norton user but Avast is much better IMO
Curio January 17th, 2005, 12:57 PM AVG, Antivir or Avast!
Any of these free ones work just fine. Some of the other Free Lite ones out there (like Bitdefender) don't do realtime scanning so are no substitute. Personally I like 'AVG 7 free' the best just because of the GUI but they all catch Viruses, Trojans and some Adware and are just as worthy of HDD space as Norton.
cash_site January 17th, 2005, 23:12 PM This little app could come in quite handy, especially removing older NIS versions, I have 2002 running, but AVG seems to be getting the thumbs-up ;)
Norton is not that great - especially when it comes to Trojans and AdwareActually depends on Symantec's definition of a Virus, adware/trojans/spyware usually dont meet the definition thus not checks for it... hence the reliance (and safe practice) of using a dedicated spyware prog (ad-ware or SpyBot).
One thing we ALL have in common, is that we use more than 1 app at a time, and usually practice safe computing, and usually notice things quickly when the PC slows down ;)
Curio January 22nd, 2005, 16:32 PM You may also like these as they are for 2004 and 2005 which RNAV2003 doesn't do.
tarun January 22nd, 2005, 18:33 PM Coming to you from FireFox 0.7 on Knoppix STD 1.0 - live and direct - HDDs on 'read only' try infecting me now you lowdown internet malware peddling scum. :)
I like you! :D i have major virus problems.. :( I never had a problem with dialup, but now after I got "broadband" (Most indian broadband connections are like 24x7 glorified dialups), I get infected just about everyday.
I use IE and firefox occasionally(cos firefox hangs for no reason). I have AVG(occasionally run stinger) free and zonealarm free, and the usual spyware-removers. Can u suggest any thing else to prevent the virii problems?
Curio January 22nd, 2005, 22:23 PM On a clean system (b4 you get infected to hell) install IE-Spyad, SpywareBlaster, Avast! (or AVG or AntivirPE) and Firefox 1. Make sure you have the firewall on (XP one or Sygate if you like) and get all patched up to date via windows update. You are now protected woohoo! In case you still get some little horrors through you should have at your disposal SpyBot S&D, AdAware SE (only need exec and sigs) and X-Cleaner_Free. Use Firefox as your browser unless you visit a site where you must use IE (mainly MS sites).
You are pretty well secure.
hotmale January 23rd, 2005, 22:24 PM The only real problem I have with Norton is getting all the crap that it installs out of your computer should you decide to delete it... I mean it is buried in your OS. Symantec this, norton that.I was just going to ask: "What's wrong with the uninstall feature?" :D
phishhead January 23rd, 2005, 23:20 PM besides leaving traces all over your OS dir and trashes your tcp/ip stack sometimes. but I biggest reason for dropping them was I was uploading some infected files to another members ftp and they were infected. after telling me this I did a trendmicro online scan and had 3 viruses. So I said so long to norton and been using mcafee ever since. well until I contract another one then see ya mcafee.
GimieGimieGimie January 24th, 2005, 16:15 PM A remover is always welcome, thanks.
I agree, Norton's products take far too much presidence over the operating system.
I disagree with AVG 7.0 (FREE) being a good alternative to NAV 2003/2004/2005, AVG (FREE) last time i checked didn't have real time scanning or e-mail scanning.
I personally stick with nortons, because i've tried pretty much everything else, and nortons is the only one that's ever kept me 100% protected and safe (AFTER) a virus has gotton onto my pc, because lets face it, viruses still find their way into your pc, even with the best software installed.
What's important is containment to completely reduce or avoid damage, and nortons is excellent at this.
Just yesterday while browsing porn (a dangerous task i might add :p), a weblink linked me onto a virus ridden page, it was intential, the mother f**kers and about 2-3 trojans got through onto the system and nortons removed them like a charm.
I agree that nortons isn't 100% on trojans, but spyware?
When did it become an anti-(VIRUS)'s job to detect/prevent and remove spyware?
Spyware isn't a virus, i've never had spyware cause damage to my OS or software, but has always slowed down the pcs performance but i've never concidered spyware to be dangerous, merely a noisence.
That being said, i only realized that NAV 2005 scanned for spyware when i done a full system scan the other day, i haven't scanned for spyware with ad-aware for quite some time, thanks to firefox's security preventing them coming on board.
And nortons detected not 1, but 3 viruses. and i was like WTF?
Worried i waited for the scan to end, which took an hour i must say (damn resource hog!) :p
And then i find out it's ONLY spyware, now every time i run a NAV scan, i'm always going to be worried for no reason when nortons claims i have infected files, when it's only just spyware, i think it's stupid and AV's should leave spyware detection and removal to their dedicated counterparts.
P.S. I really should get around to trying out Avast!, i hear nothing but good comments about it, nortons is great, but just far too slow!

Conan January 25th, 2005, 11:41 AM My friend called me up earlier cause his Norton 2004 was screwing up. I told him to uninstall it and to download Avast. Once installed, Avast found tons of viruses! He also loves the Star Trek like voice warnings of Avast. :D
GimieGimieGimie January 25th, 2005, 18:29 PM Hey, i never bad mouthed avast or any other anti-virus that actually tries to improve it's self, i think nortons is far from perfect, i would like a better solution, i'm going to download avast now :p
Btw Conan - I downloaded the file with firefox, the file was allowed to be downloaded, and with a manual scan nortons found the virus with no fuss.
But if Avast can actually detect the virus before even downloading, then that's 100x better :D
Conan January 26th, 2005, 02:42 AM But if Avast can actually detect the virus before even downloading, then that's 100x better :D
It needs to be configured to do that. FastGame knows how to enable all the early warning devices of Avast. I just follow his instructions. :D

The user interface is gonna take some getting used to. Do you guys use the default skin or do you have a personal favourite?
Conan January 27th, 2005, 01:08 AM I just use default.
