Toshiba - Magnia SG20 Wireless Ready Multifunction Appliance Server (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=469502&sku=T24-1556%20P&SRCCODE=WEM578C)
OK, TigerDirect has this promotion. My router is working really crazy lately, so I was thinking to give this one a go. After all a router can cost 80 (Linksys) so why not pay a bit more and have a lot of extras included???
Now, my real question is, how could I take advantage of the device? Could I use it for my web host?.
I think it is a interesting project to make it work as a web host. Would you guys be up to it?? ;)

qspeed might not be the greatest but its wireless and with a kickin os yo'll have a rocken web host, that could be very usefull,

OK, then I am getting it. I will use it as Rouer too ;)
The question is how do I turn this into a web server ????

November 10th, 2003, 22:04 PM
thats all you need.and iv got it, if you need admins ill glady volunteer, hehe, and iv got a dedicated server myself, and im making a web hosting server with the enterpirse editon to give ppl a chance to help build the servers for COD (Call Of Duty) i can get blazing high speed but its like $250 a month so it must be mega bandwith,

November 10th, 2003, 22:32 PM
Well, what I meant is what I need in order to set up the web server. I was refering to Domain for example. Could I use Dynns and redirect the IP to the server??
Would it kill my bandwith if I use it to host my signature also??
Those were my questions. Now, for another point I think also that .Net would be better because if I host games, it will have to run Windows or I would have to get the Linux version for the game. humm

well not all games run linus for thier servers but most fps games do but they also have the windwos coutner part added with thecd.s or for download, and fora domain it wouldnt be too hard, youd just need to have a few comps or add it to a primary domain makein it a child doman, then setup a dns through .Net and you shold be all set to go if not you could use noip.com for a dns name or a redirect,

Depends on if you are doing this for profit or for hobby. If you are doing it for profit I would install it at a ISP. For fun I would install it at home.

it is too low a server for profit. It is mainly for fun, and as an experience.
I want to host my personal web page, and maybe the signature too, because the host is always cutting it ;)

I use a program called "www file serve pro" to host my signature selector beta v2 website

it is basically a website that has some sigs i can choose.

You can also uplad ore sigs to ti from the web

it is really cool and worth checking out

just create your webpages like you normally fdo and tell fileshare to use your index .

now use no-ip to get a name for your domain and your set

mine is egghead.no-ip.org

it is down until i get my home internet back up

down for a week\

yep, something like that would be ok. After all it is only 200 bucks, for a sig host (and router, and VPN, and web server, and game server, and MP3 server for myself :P)
BTW, I got it today. I hope to be able to pook around it in the weekend a little bit, thought I will have a busy one. I was thinking if it stills behaves good to install a large drive into it, and have there the mule, so the write to disk don't affect my performance. I had been thinking to have a separate PC for that for a while, and that might be able to do it, thought I could us another one. Just a thought at the moment

OK, I got it and it is running. Actually I am writting this connected thru the Magnia (Not in the Magnia thought).
Here are my impresions:
It is like a beefed up router/VPN/Web server solution. It is not in the small computer road thought.
I am still reading thru the user guide, so I can use it more in an advance way. It is based in Red Hat 7, but I don't see Linux Interface.
Well, this is how it works, you connect thru Intranet interface to configure it, like you would do with a router.
Unfortunately it doesn't have KVM ports (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) so it is the only way, unless I enable telnet to it. :(
This restrictme in what I can do, meaning I cannot just format and install W Server 2003, or RH9 if I wanted.
I don't know if I can install other software yet, thought it looks doubtfull.
For the moment, I configured VPN (So I can acces my music from the office :p) and I am trying to find a more advance way to set up the firewall. I need Firewall. Later I will try to find a way to install extra software.
If I had known this, I would had prefered buying a cheap PC (eMachines @ WalMart) and a switch, but well, it is done. :D
It looks great for more like bussiness orientated networks. But not that much for what I want it to do. Live and learn. It is fancy thought, and it looks cool.

if you can mod it as in add a nic then i can help ya saetup a win 2003 install,

Dehcbad25
November 20th, 2003, 04:40 AM
Well, it has a PCMCIA slot, and that is about it. I can add a second hard drive, but it uses laptop HDD. After that it only has paralell port, 8 network connections, 1 WAN, and one modem

November 20th, 2003, 05:00 AM
okay do you know if it has a PXE nic intagrated?

Dehcbad25
November 20th, 2003, 05:27 AM
OK, Shadow, lets calm down. Why do you have to call me a PXE NIC?? Ohhh that wasn't an insult??? :p
I have no clu what you asked about the PXE Nic??
Anyhow. I telnet to it, and I can have more flexibility once I am connected to surf. The problem is that I don't know how to configure the firewall feature thru telnet. It is Red Hat 7.3.
I would like to know if I can run rpm also, so I can install stuff. Hummm. I would be a lot happier if I had a more familiar interface.
Does anyone need a web server??? I can sell you mine??? :p
What I want to do is too much advanced.

shadow_warez
November 20th, 2003, 16:11 PM
wel if it has a PXE nic you can turn a compinto a dhcp server ,and make the web server grab a Os through a network,

Dehcbad25
November 20th, 2003, 22:00 PM
Still, what is a PXE?? :p
I have done Telnet into it, and now I am pooking around the OS.
The Web Interface of the server makes it for a fast setup, but it has very limited limited configuration. I am dissapointed that I cannot select which ports specifically to enable. That is bad. I cannot have my horse family running, neither I can enable the port 1337.
I think it uses Iptables for the NAT, so i can manually change the ports to accept. The problem is that I have to learn to forward those ports to my PC. Humm, maybe BB can help on that

Edit:GOT THE PXE DEF
Almost every corporate PC purchased since 1998 is "Wired for Management" (WfM) compliant. WfM is an industry standard, initiated by Intel to improve the manageability of client PC systems, and is part of the Intel and Microsoft PC98 specification. The Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) is part of the WfM specification. ;)

how much hd space do you have, and can you take any pics of its interface?

pxe is very sweet, used it in collage for client comps,

DEHC,
Analog X makes a product that maps ports for you.

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pmapper.htm

But to use it on your new device, you'll have to install it. Unfortunately, I don't think they have a linux port :( being that your device is based on Red Hat linux 7...

I have a similar device that was given to me. I still haven't even figured out how to connect it and get it running. But I will soon.

Surely it came with a manual. Check in the manual. Mine came with like an 800 page manual... almost too much information to contend with.

I also know you can upgrade the OS if it is like mine.

I Think I will ship this to FG (for only 200$ :p) so he can go out of his boring XP life :D
It doesn't really come with a manual. It has a user guide, and that is it. Yep, the user guide is very thorought but about the web interface. I want more than that.
Don't get me wrong, it is a really nice server, and as I have experimented, it makes the setting up of a network extremely easy with a ready to go intranet. I even uploaded MP3 to the Magnia, and it creates a playlist and I can play music like if it was streaming media. That is nice. I tried it even from the office. I would give you the access, but it would make me very vulnerable ;)
I haven't figured out how to make it a FTP yet, thought it is supported from the shipping. But I got the Intranet, configuration, VPN, Jukebox, Photo Album all running from start in about 2 hours.
The problem is that it isn't just enought for me :p
I need to map ports, I want to run horses in it. I want to host games (I WANT, I WANT) ;)
I am thinking now, to publish it in eBay, and sell it. It is brand new and I haven't broken the OS yet. At least I will be able to get some money back (not what I invested thought) and I can just build me a PC and make it the server I want.
IT has 20GB HDD Space.
pics of what interface you want?? The web interface??
Anyone wants this server???:D

Did you try contacting the manufacturer about how to do port forwarding? I am sorry but I don't understand setting up a horse???

I think it should be some file or setting you edit that allows for port forwarding. I'd set on it a while, and give it more than a week.

I admit, mine has a funky web interface too.. it is written in Java or something like that.. I don't like it, but it seems to work rather well.

But if you cannot stand it, cut your losses while you can.

I like the web interface. It makes it a lot easier, but I can d port forwarding, which is vital for me.
about the horse, I meant eHorse ;) on port 4662 and 4672 ;)
BB, I have a question, how do I change file permitions for folders in Linux, assigning by users???

Big Booger
November 22nd, 2003, 08:57 AM
I think you can use the change mod command:

http://66.225.81.100:8080/nova/man/chmod.htm

I do know however, to install programs you must use the Super User/Root...

that is one of the security benefits of using linux.
:p

Dehcbad25
November 22nd, 2003, 15:52 PM
I have the root password so that is OK.
I know that I need to use the chmod command, but I don't know how to specify to the command that I want access to only specific accounts.
I could type this: chmod go -r-w-x test
That would change the test folder permitions to none for anybody but the user. OK, I need to specify which uses can access it. For example in most cases I want at least 2 users to access the folder, but not all users.
What I am trying to do, is to set up photo albums to see thru the web, but that not everyone can see everything. Depending on the user, the level access and where they will be able to go.

I think you might want to get a third party solution for this.

Enters QUEDO:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/quedo/

 Screenshot (http://freshmeat.net/screenshots/42644/)

About:
Quedo is a Web-based file manager, which provides a password-protected area, that can be used for uploading and annotating files. Each user can manage their own separate folder, or share a common directory. The administrator can limit individual users' permissions. Users can upload, rename, and delete files and folders, manipulate ZIP archives, send files via email, and control permissions. It also supports a Web-based clipboard, a trash bin, and has four different views.

I think perhaps that is what you are looking for?

Oh and one other thing Dehc,
I figured out how you can do port forwarding on your web server since it is using Redhat 7.X

http://www.netfilter.org/documentation/tutorials/blueflux/iptables-tutorial.html

iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d $EXTIP --dport 25 -j DNAT --to 192.168.0.2:25

where EXTIP is your global IP.

Hope that helps.
:D

We tried something similar with a friend and did not work :p
Also, I believe I also need POSTROUTING. so there is 2 commands to add.
about the folders, yes that is good. The idea to limit the folders actually is that the Magnia automatically converts the folders in certain folder into photo albums, so I wanted different users to be able to access different folders. I will try that out and see if it works ;)
