Catch 22

I'm running Win 98,
I recently installed a Ethernet card (got some msg, saying insert Win98 disc and do this...., I hate when that happens, anyway I didn't have it so I blew by it)

It seems to have installed OK.

I then tried installing my new DSL program, but get a error saying
"Dailup Network" program not istalled or corrupted.

Any ideas ?

I've tried to re install the ethernet program, but it won't let me, propably because it thinks its already there ... ?

Personally I would remove the card from the system and reboot. Once you get back into Windows you can remove the DSL software. Hopefully that will get you back to a clean starting point so you can try again. Also I copied all the .CAB files onto the hard drive on my 98 machines into Windows/Options/Cabs folder so if something does ask for the cd I just point it there...

You cannot continue to install the ethernet card without the Win98 disc.

Windows is trying to install network protocals that are needed for your os to comunicate with your ethernet.

without the disc you cannot install this device.

You should try to borrow win98 off a friend or something.

If you are tired of having to reach for the win98x disk everytime you make a hardware adjustment, try this.

You will have to have the Win98 disk to do this.

1. Create a folder on C:\ drive named CAB
2. Copy all CAB files from the Win98 disk to the new folder.
3. With Notepad open C:\autoexec.bat.
4. If there is an autoexec.bat file and no path statement add one by typing path=C:\path; on a new line.

If one exists and has a line that starts with "path=" add the new folder to the path. You do this by closing the last path on the line with a ";" and then typing "C:\CAB;". Save autoexec.bat file.

If there is no autoexec.bat file, type "path=C:\path;" in Notepad and save the document as autoexec.bat.

In the future, each time your computer boots, Win 98 will automatically set C:\CAB as a folder for Win 98 to check when installing new hardware.

Rik, or anyone else.

I don't see Windows/options/cabs , is there anywhere else the cabs may be.

I'm trying to re install the Dialup manager and still don't have the 98 disc, so maybe I can poin to the cabs.

That directory may not exist on your system unless you created it or possibly the vendor of your system put the folder and cab files there. I created my own and copied the cabs to it, but unfortunatly if you don't have the cd that won't be possible.

There was a misunderstanding here. The .CAB files are on the Win98 disk. The procedure (copying the .cab files to the HD) I described in the post above, has to be accomplished with Win 98 present.

They are in d:\win98 (or whichever drive the win98 disk is in)

Would it be possible for someone to copy the Cab files (zip them maybe)
and post them somewhere so I can download them ?
