PeerGuardian v1.99 pr10 is now available.

This release isn't the installer so if you don't already have PeerGuardian installed, this may require you to run an installer for an older release first!!

Chnages:
Less CPU (Again!!)
Normal Priority mode fixed
Basic IP Tools added
Menus cleaned up!!

I didn't think you needed an installer...don't you just run the EXE in the zip file and leave it running?

well I ran the install and still sucks up half of my system resources.

I use the rules in Sygate. The people over at peergardian forums said that is best.

what seemed to help me is I went to the task monitor and change the pg.exe to low priority. and now it is only taking about 30megs of ram instead of 45.

the sygate rules... is that fixed now in 5.5 where it would crash when trying to apply all those IP addresses.

For those using peerguardian please keep in mind that importing the ips into your firewall will give you better overall protection as pg does not cover udp connections (you need zapro4 if you're trying to import ips for zone alarm- you'll find those directions further down the FAQ). But a good reason for using peerguardian is that it logs connections (which you should be able to direct your firewall to do, just make sure you log all) so you have a better idea of what's goin down... - http://www.peerguardian.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=133

For Sygate rules or other firewall, use the converter here: http://www.peerguardian.net/pgipdb/pgipdb_conv.php

I think either way your gonna lose resources. The problem is not with the application, but the download application that you are using.

For example, if you have eMule running and trying to download 10 files. You have your connections set to find 2000 connections per file, your looking at 20,000 ip connections to your pc just for downloads. That does not include the number of people requesting files from you as well. These numbers keep fluctuating as people connect/disconnect from the network.

The drag on the resources comes from peerguardian needing to scan all these IP's on a continual basis. By placing this in Sygate, you're only placing the cpu burden on Sygate.

The only solution to this is to limit the number of IP connections to the computer. Unfortunately, this will also limit the number of "hits" on a file and may slow the download of the file.

hmmm. well i've never seen smc.exe go above 15% whereas PG would constantly hit 99%

I agree with lynchknot & the folks @PG forum, the rules in Sygate is the way to go...less cpu & ram without question.

PG v1.99 pr7 works well for me, it uses 17mb ram and the cpu never (that I know of) goes above 30% but I think Sygate works the best.

so did they fix the crash when adding ip addresses to sygate.

You have to break up the IP's into smaller groups to avoid the crash. I haven't done it recently though.

I did the sygate IP's and it works like a charm. cpu went down to about 1-2%. I did notice like stripe said if I do a search in emule the cpu goes crazy so it makes sense.

You don't need an installer, all that is for is a update to pr7,just replace the exe file in the program files directory.

to get the most up to date list for peerguardian go to

http://www.peerguardian.net

we also hove converts that will change the ip database over to formats that can be imported into most main firewalls

and bluetack v and myself are makeing an app that will expand the databases and automaticly convert the lits and export them to a few things like peerguardian k++ and emule.

check it out at http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showforum=3

if there is any more questions let me know,or come to our irc chat at

irc.peerguardian.net
/join #peerguardian

we also have a webapp that will let you access the irc with out a client.

see ya
