Farming must be the life. Man in tune with nature, busting ground with the cold steel of a plow, working the soil like the father's of our forefathers. Busting your back out in the hot sun, hands cracked and dirtied by the manual labor of providing food and other homegrown items using natural and artificial methods...
Man it must be like heaven.

I envy you.

A very technical person, expecially someone that lives in the king of moving forward (Japan), always disires such a life style at least one time in their life :D

We all need a balance of everything to feel truely alive!

I feel the disire slightly too BB :D

Farm life could be sweat i suppose, i don't get along with animals though, apart from something like a dog :p

As far as my knowledge goes, all my relitives are all city folk, a few in the countryside, but that's just for the peace and quiet ;)

Still... ya never know, i'm sure i will meet many of my unknown relitives that could be "people of the land" when i'm out on my travels :D

Nope, just one stupid dog that runs into things for me!

Their eggs are normal color but they're pretty tiny. They are also somewhat affectionate which took me by surprise as I used to raise fighting cocks in the past and found them to be quite dumb creatures.

Bantams are the miniatures of the poultry world. The word bantam is the overall term for the more than 350 kinds of true breeding miniature chickens. They exist in almost every breed and variety that we see in large chickens. In addition, there are some kinds of bantams that have no large counterpart. Bantams are complete miniatures raised primarily for exhibition, a purpose for which they excel. They are classified for show purposes by comb type, whether or not they have feathers on their legs, and by the game varieties. Bantams have the same requirements for shape, color and physical features as do the large fowl. They should weight about 1/5 of their large counterparts. Bantams are kept for their beauty, exhibition, and as pets. They can also be quite useful for the production of eggs and their meat is fine-grained and nutritious. Often bantams can be kept in areas too small for regular chickens.

I think that mine are Japanese Bantams but some of them have feathers of their feet.

What in sam hell do you want with chickens? Are you into cock fighting? Or are you farming eggs? Are they gonna be dinner? What is the situation and reasoning behind you have some Bantam Chickens?
They are rather pretty, and I too have never heard of chicken shows... Sounds funny to me. Do they wear a leash and lead them around a ring? LOL
Would be kind of cool though to have a hobby that not many people know much about like chicken breeding and showing.

When I was a young boy (11 maybe) I used to raise fighting cocks. Stopped that then we started commercially breeding German Shepherds. When our most beautiful and smartest dog died, we gave it up.

Then one day our neighbours bantam chicken (hen) flies over the wall and stays with us. While contemplating whether to return her or not she starts laying eggs. We decide to keep her, all the eggs hatch and now we have a caboodle! They are quite intelligent and affectionate. They eat from my hand, some of them come forward when you call their name! One of my males flies up to my bedroom window when I call his name! They lay eggs and we eat that. I would never contemplate cooking them though, they're too much of a pet to do that!

man Uschie, you bring back memories of my childhood, I lived out in the middle of a cornfield plot, house surrounded by cornfields for about 15 years in Indiana, where Tinker is from.. It was a pleasant country, but life was hard.
I now live in Japan and am surrounded by more farms, only these are rice paddy farms, but its all the same. Country is country except in Japan, you can be in a city in 5 minutes LOL

Good luck with your horse. Why not use spurless barbed wire? Or use an electric fence, one good zap, and that horse will stay away!:p

BB

uschie
June 24th, 2002, 23:39 PM
Nice idea B.B. except electric fence don't mean much to most of this horses, remember they were beaten before,it's also hard to upkeep( heavy morning dueand grass underneath)as for smooth wire man to do this whole place would be a hell of a job.

Big Booger
June 25th, 2002, 03:40 AM
yah,
I forgot they were mistreated.. And the barbedless wire is expensive, but if you had the time, you could take wirecutters, and snip off the barbs, would take a long time, but it could be done, and the animals wouldn't get harmed...
Just an idea. I hope your animals return to good health!

I actually bought a horse this morning. She is 6 years old and already had 3 foals, so naturally she's very poor but very gentle. There is no law against using a animal to breed to the point of cruelty, to plain break them down and waring them out e.t.c., so i had to buy her to get her away from that situation.I will keep her as my own horse.Could have bought a good P.C. for that kind of $,but what the hell P.C's don't have life and you can't pet them, they also don't eat which is a good thing, unless i have to start sending eats to you dud's. I'm not just want you to know i was just giving a report:)Also i don't know how much you know about horses, but seems to me you spend to much $ on your P.C., because a good walker in good health(what they deem good health) like the one i bought this morning is 2,900.00 and that's pretty cheap, normally they would have asked about 4,000.00 for that horse. You mean to tell me you spend that time over on your P.C. ??

Yea I sure have. In the last 2 years I have bought and built 4 PCs. All but one are high end systems. I gave my girlfriend one and my cousin who is just like a sister to me one and I have 2 running around here. Of course along with that are all the goodies that would go along, router, printers, HDDs, OS software, etc.. So if you start adding up all the items I sure could come close to the mark.

The only thing I was trying to say in my last post is that there is someone out there spending money on computers for you. I would not spend excess cash on animals, but then again I would not let them starve either. I would try to find someone like yourself who is a animal technician to take over........

Now that I am chewing on my left foot.........:msnblush:

Just letting you know.By default,"last page" is always shown when a thread goes beyond 4 pages,it's just a shortcut so that the threads page count display doesn't look untidy with a long row of page numbers.
I know some boards that currently have threads with over 40,000 replies.

Theoretically the maximum amount of replies a thread can display

It rained all last night finally. All the ponds are full as well as the drinking containers for the goats. Drinking containers for the goats you may ask? They have a pond but will not use it . Long ago i also used a hose to fill up there water, but they don't like that either, the taste of plastic? So i have to schlepp water over there on a daily basis.
Today is also the day a guy from town comes out hier to help me milk the goats. This has become a yearly problem starting in spring and ending in late fall.
All the goats are female and think they'r pregnant every spring.I tried hormone shots e.t.c., nothing works.I know of no other animal that exhibits that kind of behavior regularly.
It's a royal pain especially because i don't use the milk, but somtimes i wish i knew how to make chevre cheese it's pretty expensive.Well i can't do everything and such is life on the farm.Later.

CHEVRE CHEESE

Ingredients:
3 oz. of goat cheese
1 egg (beaten) to make an egg wash
1 cup panco bread crumbs
? cup flour

Method:
Form goat cheese to the shape of a pear and roll in egg wash,
flour, egg wash again, then in bread crumbs. Make sure
cheese is well coated with bread crumbs. Put cheese in hot oil
(vegetable) and make sure it is submerged completely. When
bread crumbs start to turn golden brown pull out. Put a
rosemary sprig on top of cheese to look like the pear's stem.

Hope that helps,
BB

B.B. my problem is not the way to cook it, it's the time to make the cheese itself, next time simply coated in very course pepper add a sprinkle of rosemary, then roll in to grapeleafs and grill. When surfing add a mix of sundried tomato and marinadet olives with a touch of lemon. Happy eating.:D

I thought some of you may be interested to learn how i got this goats.
It's a adventure of the sort. Before i moved hier i lived in D.C. and used to visit a friend about 20 miles away. On my way i noticed some goats in a woodet area along the way just right along the highway. In the winter i also noticed that nobody took care of them, they were eating bark e.t.c.(back to what phish said) so i droped by there every few days and droped hay apples bread and whatever i had available. One day i went and the goats did not come to see me , so checked around to see what happend and hier the story beginns.
The goats had lifed in that field since 1973 and just lived wild (birth and death). The owner wanted them finally gone because the land was very valueble and decited to have the goats removed. The local firedepartment roundet them up for a fundraiser and they where send to auction. I traced some of them and bought them back, knowing i was ready to buy a farm.Unforunantly some endet up for slaughter. There was only one goat left they could not catch. I got her the fallowing day because she had a baby which i tied up and used for bait. That's the story of the goats. They have made my life more interesting.:D

I got 8 new little Guinea chicks today , my neighborhood will be bug free for years to come :)

uschie you have any Guinea Fowl ? think with all the animals you have & living in West Virginia you would have lots of bugs....Guinea Fowl will keep bugs away especially ticks , also good fly eaters as long as their on the ground where they can be caught. They are also good guard dogs (birds) better than geese !

I'd build them a Home and keep them in it while they are chicks that way when they grow up they'll always come back to it. They still might roost in a tree later but least it'll be your tree & not one 5 miles down the road

Yes they eat Japanese Beatles , Michigan was over run with those beatles awhile back and the Guineas ate them as long as they were in reach. They also eat large red & black Ants yet smart enough to stay away from the fire ants. Once grown these birds pretty much take care of them selves.

Boogs,

Watch the little fellow close. I once lived in an Asian Country and adopted a mutt (mixed up breed). He put on the pounds quick, I used to call him FatMan Jr. I left him tied up outside a bar early one evening and when I came out he was gone. No way he untied my knot (x-diver). After threating the hoodlums that always hung around the outside of the bar I finally got my dog back. Luckily, it was headed for a grill.

That lil pooch cost me about $20.00 that day (worth every penny) at the local police station. I gave the thief a good thrashing and had to bribe my way out of the incident.

Just be careful of the neighbors.

Time for my animal loving contribution.

Back in 1986 we saw an ad in the local paper for the "National Retired Greyhound Trust".Basically they wanted to find homes for not just retired ex racing Greyhounds, but also abandoned ex racers.
We contacted them and they visited our home. They brought with them a 3 year old black bitch named "queenie" who had been abandoned by her trainer/owner and was found close to death on a Gypsy (travellers)site.
Well straight away she started following me around, and the people from the "trust" could see she was happy and settled,so they took her back with them, prepared all the necessary paperwork, and a week later we took ownership of her.
We nursed her back to full health, and we gave her a loving and caring home life for 6 years.
Sadly in 1992,when she was 9,she developed a large cancerous tumour on her jaw and we had to have her put down. Now i'm known as a bit of a hard b#####d,but i have to admit i was devastated by her death and i still think about her even now,9 years later.

In early 1993 we decided the time was right to get another dog.So we went to a rescue centre and fell in love with a 12 week old German Shepherd bitch named "Lily".She was the runt of a litter and was passed on to the rescue centre because the Pet shop couldn't find a buyer.
She is now 9,(10 in October),and is fit, healthy and runs around the house and garden like she is still a puppy. She has never had to go to the vets, apart for her yearly jabs, health check up and hip screen.German Shepherds are notorious for developing hip joint problems in later life, but fortunately so far her joints are in perfect condition.

We could never forget "Queenie",but equally we'd be lost without "Lily".

The second more serious encounter with g.s. was about 14years ago.I was working the night shift at the hospital. A injured G.S. came in with multible stab wounds,a police dog. After suturing him i put a note on the cage " do not feed attack dog".The next night i started to just talk with him going on and on and on, how anfair i thought it was for him to be in the middle of human stupitidy e.t.c., opend up his cage and he put his huge head on my shoulder ,i promised he would not have to work again. I fought with the V.A. police dept. and they would not go for it. Rev.s picture brought back a mountain of memorys and to this day i think of Apallo(pete). There is nothing sporting about them. All they do is to contribute to the overpopulation of dogs by glamerizing breeding. As far as i'm concernt they should be required to help euth. the dog population they contribute to and then see how they like it .It's all ego nothing more.No kennel club in the U.S.A. unlike europe has ever givin a rats ass about the health and well being of dogs or cats, they do not inspect the place or anything else about the animal, hence breeds with papers from puppy mills. I interviewed a lot of the kennel clubs a few years ago,it was broadcast on 20-20,nothing has changed but i tell you it gets me pissed of to start on that subject because i'm the one cleaning up the shit for them and people like em.

I would use fiberglass roofing, strong, light, and relatively cool in the summer, it will never rust, lets sunlight in, and will last a long time. We used it on a building project when I was young. I dont know how expensive it is, but in my opinion when you consider how light it is compared to tin, and the benefits over Tin, then I would go with fiberglass.

Unbelievable, the road to the farm is about a mile long , it's a beautyful road with wild ginger, ferns and plants you just don't see to much any more. The Rhododendron's(well over 100years old) have been in bloom and they are a thing to behold. Well after 3years the state thought they should look after the road, cut all the rhododendron's in bloom and pretty much disstroy the ginger e.t.c.,then thought it may be a good idea to reach across my front field and cut my blackberry bushes.
I went true this 4years ago and offred the state to teach botany classes for free. This never came to fruition.
There is a fine of 500.00 for any person who cuts or digs up a wild rhododendron(it's the west virginia state flower)What a bunch of buttholes and asswipes.

Well, we just gave our German Shepard, Lady, away to some very nice people. The people who took her take very good care of their animals and were greatful in many ways. We were very attached to Lady, but she had emotional problems, and that forced us to put her in the care of someone who could work with her. The poor girl was abused by a male when she was a puppy I think. Whenever a man approaches her she becomes nervous, urinates, and cowers. We sought professional help from the kennel in Landstuhl where they cared for her for two weeks, but they informed us that they would be unable to cure her problems. The kennel suggested that we give her to people that had a successful history with dogs that have her emotional problems. It broke my wife and sons hearts as well as my own to see her go. It is a long story but I think we did the right thing for her sake.

We had the same problem a couple of years back. We ordered this German Shepherd from the U.S. primarily as a show dog. He was magnificently handsome and built really heavy. Alas he was a coward and would cower and piss like your dog. We shipped him back to the kennel that sold him to us as that kind of temperament would disqualify him from dog shows.

:wail: I am tearing up just trying to figure out how to tell this story.. I had a small dog (female) named Pepper that I had to have her put to sleep because of a growth inside here that was cutting of her intestine. Had her from a pup and she was my best friend for about 6 years. I can still remember the tears in her eyes as she sat on the vets table shaking and making eye contact only with me. I had held her for nearly six hours before that and she knew what was about to happen. She did not want to go as much as I did not want have her put to sleep. As my voice quivered and my hands shook I held her and apologized to her for what I had to do. I can say as I set here and tell this story that happened almost 15 years ago, this is one female that my love for has never changed.....

Last night i went to a friends place. He callt to tell me he has a new addition. He has 2 horses(used to be mine)
There are 2mangers in each stall, one for grain and one for hay.
One of the hay mangers has been taken over by a pretty little chicken with 7babys,so the horse is eating out of one while the chicken lives in the other. Cute i think:D :D Good thing the horse is not in to balute, hehehe:p :p :D

uschie,i see you haven't enabled PM's in your profile. If you want to enable them click on the usercp button (row of buttons at top right),then click on Edit Options.
In the Messaging & Notification section, put a dot next to "yes" for Enable Private Messaging?
and put a dot next to "yes" for Pop up a box when you receive a Private Message?.
Now scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "Submit Modifications" button.
Now when you recieve a PM a pop-up box will appear to inform you.Just follow the instructions in the pop-up box to read any PM's you recieve.

I can enable the settings for you if you prefer.

They are also looking forward to the tomatoes, for that reason i always grow lot's of them.
Corn would be realy nice but i don't grow it,it attracts to many pest's and i don't use chemicals of any kind.
The foal is turning darker(not chestnut any longer),i wonder just how dark she will get(her father is black).

Just now needet to administer some T.L.C. to myself and a rather little nasty wound on my arm.
One of the cat's was harassing a black snake as i was looking out of the window.
I've had a rather large black snake living in one of the barns for many years.I don't like it when she dangles from the rafters unexpected but i like them around for rat control and because they kill copperheads.
Anyway my cat got me while the snake bit him on the nose. The snake made her exit and i was the one most hurt of the 3of us.

People hier have a superstition that black snakes and copperheads mate which is not possible, in fact they fight copperheads usually the black snake kills the copperhead but in the end is also dead.

Sorry Tinker i don't have a camera and if i did i would not know how to post it,this are the verry simble things about computers that one needs to be shown i think,in person not on a forum.
Chestnut is fairly light browne a little lighter then a actual chestnut, when she was born she was chestnut with little dark brouwn circles around her eyes and now the circles got larger and larger almost covering her whole head and some of her body, the white remaining.
I think i'm going to keep her and the horse i've talked about a while ago that somone wants to give me (Boarding)

During the same week in February that the Westminster Dog Show opened in New York City, United Arab Emirates held its first-ever beauty contest for camels in Abu Dhabi, with total prize money of about $27,000.

And in June, an Interlachen, Fla., farmer named a goat (which he said came from a long line of show goats) Li'l Dale when it was born with a white marking in the shape of a "3" on its brown coat (and which the hundreds of Floridians who flocked to see it thought was surely a divine sign about the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt). (Babe Ruth also wore number 3, but the visitors seemed certain the goat did not refer to him.) [BBC News, 2-8-02]

Tiger is a girl. I have one more gate to build. I am building the kennel within a fenced in area behind the house. There are 3 possible exits and each one needed a gate with a lock. I have built 2 and am working on the last one. They work well enough. I just hope she doesn't find some way out of the new kennel. Right now she is chained using a 3 metre rope. I want her to be able to walk around freely within the kennel. The kennel has approximately 100-300 square meters of space for her to run around. There are 5 trees and I will put her doghouse in the kennel. She sleeps in the doghouse when it rains.
We took her to get rabies shots the other day, and to get registered. Tomorrow she goes in for another checkup. It's really cheap. Less than 30 bucks for the rabies shot and the registration.

It takes four hours on the riding lawnmower and the another three hours of triming around the flower beds and shrubs and trees, all because i pickt up that nasty little habit of planting ,planting and more planting in england :D :D .Each year i'm committed not to plant any more and each year the dam gardens are getting bigger and bigger.

By now i'm sure the gardens are worth more then the dam house.

I have an idea how to get rid of your lawn mowing issue, and its fairly environmental friendly. Get a huge tarp or piece of plastic and 4 semi heavy objects. Lay the tarp or plastic out on the lawn, and let it set 2-3 days with the corners weighed down. In 2-3 days time, move the tarp and do it again. After 1-2 weeks, your lawn will be dead and you wont have to mow Hehehe

hey uschie...my mom called me yesterday and told me my goat is limping so I went over and he was limping on his front hoove....well did take wire cutters and trimmed down his hooves that were folding over but all of them were the same way...then I took some peroxide and cleaned his front leg but I didn't notice any swelling or rocks stuck in his foot. will go this weekend and see if it is still limping but got any ideas or anything I should look for.

uschie
July 25th, 2002, 21:56 PM
Phish., you did the right thing by trimming the hoofs, but don't forget to do this on a regular basis.
I trim mine at least 2times a month, also see if you can make a large rock pile(large rocks) that he can climbe around on on a daily basis, that really helps.
Also keep on eye on him not eating wett grass, give hay early in the morning so he wont have to go out for grass when due is on it .That to at times coses a lot of problems to the point where hoofs turn.
In the past i have taken animals and made them stay in the pond for many hours to eliveate that problem. Also go ahead and get Iodine 7% tincture as a topical wound dressing, much better then perox.,but keep in mind it's poison so keep away from the kids.
But again trim the hoofs 2times a month and get a rock pile, that should help.:)

phishhead
July 25th, 2002, 22:06 PM
so should I just keep an eye on him and see if the limping gets better...I mean what im asking is when should I get worried and take him to a vet. like i said didn't see any swelling or open wounds so I think it was just a large hang nail for a goat. I do feed him greens from the garden like bokchoy and the leaves from the broccolli and also spinich greens...are they ok...but his main diet is goat feed from the local feed store...:D

uschie
July 25th, 2002, 22:36 PM
Greens areo.k. phish., as long they are well dried, always make sure nothing is damp. Not to worry you already have taken care of the problem--Hoofs, with goats its always hoofs, that is why that rock pile would really help you.
I trust you have cleant deep in to the hoofs and removed all the shit in there??? It's not the tool of the trade , but i use a small screwdriver for that, then if you feel it nessesary apply the iodine.

Again the main things--nothing damp(wet) hoof trimming regularly,a good rock pile and no damp ground for a goat(they are mountain animals),with other words keep theyre hoofs dry and your of to health.:D

I forgot to ask you phish.

Have you given your goat a tetanus shot? Also you should give a shot for overeating, that's always a problem with goats.
Also worming must be done every month without fail.Goats have small lungs,so anytime you hear a cough it's a sign of infestation.

I'm sure you do all this things, but i just wanted to go over it because it is soooo importent.

Well a horse looks rather strange without the hair going around the front of the head and it takes a very long time to grow,it's also very importent for fly protection.

So i'm thinking of putting in some hair extentions,i need to cut mine a little bit and to use it would be very easy to do.(not cokie but actually nesesarry)

Seattle computer programmer Boris Tsikanovsky told the San Jose Mercury News in April that he has developed software that will stop his cat, Squirrel, from bringing animal prey into the house when he's not at home. Squirrel can enter though a special door via a magnet on her collar and had been hiding dead mice and birds in the furniture. Consequently, Tsikanovsky developed imaging software, with a camera by the door, that permits Squirrel to enter only if her pixeled profile shows nothing in her mouth. Here on this house we don't like to keep animals because with one is enough, and I am already living here:D
I lived 10 years in the capital of Argentina, then I lived 10 years in the west, close to the mountains, in a small city which had 500 meters of downtown ;) , but we had 6 discos :p (we like to party a lot, and drink beer)
My best friend lives only 2KM from downton and he lives in a farm. Ohh gosh, that is real life. In summer, you can go to the river, or a cannal, and swim, or we used to go biking to the mountain the whole weekend, and camp in the mountains. And the best of all, woman are the prettiest :D :D THAT IS THE IMPORTANT POINT.
Hummm I wonder, what I am doing here right now

Tomorrow i'm going to ohio to look at some timothy hey if i like it i will buy some, also lots of corn i think corn $ are going to go up for the lack of rain.
I feed lots of corn and oats mixed with sweet feed in the winter(which will be her soon)This year i had to use a lot during sommer because the grass is so thin. The ponds look like hell to.
I now have only 4 of the original17 horses left + the mare i bought and the mare and her foal.I'm thinking of keeping it small like this---I need a break.
A few days ago the foal got a halter put on her.I have a friend who is very good at that sort of thing.I hid in the house so she would not think that i had anything to do with it,hehe---it worked.Next week she needs to be weaned and i'm not looking forward to it,i'll be feeling sorry for her.-----Such is life on the farm.Later:)

Sorry uschie don't know how I missed the Farm this long.

I Live in the Thumb about 13 mi. North of Port Huron , about 7 mi. from Lake Huron. There's lots a woods around me but the land is mostly flat. I have 80 acres & except for my big yard I lease out the land to a Farmer who has corn and beans growing right now.

Hey uschie if ya ever come to visit...there's a nice river close by , doesn't have a water fall but if you want I could stand on a ladder & pour from a bucket :D

uschie
August 30th, 2002, 14:24 PM
A ladder could be fun i'm sure, could do all kinds of things with it:p
Anyway i got my corn and hay and saw a sign close to the mill "horse and tack sale",i know better but still went to look at the tack.
The problem was the horses, you see ohio is known for slaughter auctions and in deed there the where, arabiens, paso fino, standards, walkers, palomino and mules, all going to japan and europa. I did not see one person who liked a horse.
Needless to say by time i got home i was emotionally drained.
I did find a great hand made used english saddle in excellent condition for $85.00.
I wonder what my quarter horse that i ride looks like with a english saddle.Like a pimple on a ass??
That's the news for today.

It finally happend this morning.
I have always let the foal smell my face, knowing it's a very bad idea.So this morning when feeding her i let her do it again(stupid how we take chances)
Well she nippled me in the lipp,i'm just glad it was a nipple and not a real chump down or i would have lost my whole lip.As it is i only have a bad wound right on the kisser.Course i only have my own stupitity to blame.
So reade and learn and be carefull out there.

Do your right B.B. never frech kiss a farm animal,or strangers for that matter, you can catch all kinds of things and it is kind of funny in its own way.
I am running a fever and in general i am not feeling well and i have yet to figuere out how to eat and drink,so there in lyes the moral of the story" don't be stupid and think your above the law of nature".It is aplicable to all sort of things.

French Kisses are always dangerous. Not only with farm animals :p
..............

I will let you think about it:D

I had a dog which liked to lick my ear. It drivo me nuts :D He was a big dog, and he was still young. You know, puppies never stay put. One day he was runing around and came to me and his teeth got stuck in my ear. Ouchhh:( I had my ear divided in 2 vertically. Nothing seriours, I mean, it healed well, and I almost don't have a scar.
My lesson was, always that there is a big dog running around you............ cover your ears :p
