I have shed the Norton AV for a new AV. Nod32. It is small, easy, simple and does a fine job. No reason for me to keep with the same old same old when there is a multitude of software to try.

Interested in NOD32?

I am pleased so far.

personally i didnt like nod32 it had afew too many services on startup on my machine, iv since switched and grounded myself to F-prot 3.14b the scan engine is used by fsecure, so basicly same company but thie ones very very lightweight, and is content with 1.7 mb of resources, firefox takes 20 mb this thing only asks for less then 2 mb lol very good, even if you have 1.5gigs of memory lol,

Nod32 loads up one service for me, nod32krn.exe. It uses about 11MB of memory at peak. I used Fprot, but I didn't like the update methdology. I like how Nod32 leaves a little message when incoming messages in outlook have been scanned. And it doesn't take near as long for NOD32 to do a complete scan of the HDD like NAV does.

I'm interested in trying a new virus checker. One that doesnt take forever to load once you log in.

well, but NAV 2004 also checks for spyware now, doesn't it??
Also, which are other real good alternatives that keep their definitions up to date. Just look at MyDoom. It spraded really fast.

I have heard that NOD32 is among the best. It updates the virus definitions automatically by default. So there really is no need to touch it. Just install it, and let it do what it does best.

Nav is a machine killer. Lately it is becoming more and more problematic. And with that stupid activation it is very annoying. I actually am getting to the point where I hate it.

well, I will give it a try. Nav 2003 is not scanning my folders. It loocks up, so it is a great reason to throw it away ;)

I have been using NOD32 for the last couple of years, it comes free on my PCUser Magazine subscription. I used it on my XP machine while NAV2002 didnt work, but have swichted back to NAV since it works now?? But I use NOD on all my win98 pcs err 1 other LOL.

Version 1 was very small and quick, version 2 now has a better UI and more features etc, but does use slightly more resources, but what is 2mg anyway, right!

I would recommend it, they say it has 100% detection rate and the lowest false positves too.

update, I could prolly host the install file somewhere, it comes preconfigured with registration ;) Free from mag subscription hehe

It does and it seems to be working OK for me. No viruses to date and automatic updates.

I have NOD32 on one of my PC's and it works real good. I also have NAV 2003 and AVG on my other PC's and they work as well as NOD32.

I don't go by how fast an AV scans or how many resources it uses, a slow well fed blood hound will do a better job than a spoon fed hyped out poodle any day...:p

If I had to pick between the 3, I would choose AVG because its free and works just fine.

I see your logic FG. I just don't like waiting 9-12 hours for a scan of 400GB of files. I can imagine stripe feels that effect too.

Plus the NAV activation crap is a lot of trouble. Nav does a fine job of finding virii and I can say that I have never been infected to my knowledge while having NAV on my PC.

I just like trying new things. Kaspersky is one I am going to give a go at on my laptop as soon as I reformat it. :D I love variety.

that one iv tryed iv had 5 extera services installed, a mmc a background scanner, a updater, and another, but it wasnt the greatest, had a odd ui to it, but im sticking to my guns Fprot till it proves me wrong, nav iv trashed like bb said the activation thing really sucks, it would work for maybe 3 months tne ask for reactivation, then you fix it to update regualry and your clocks folr updating are changed and it s well a head ache you dont need, nav 2003 was a bit bloated but hey it is rock solid on my old server, not a problem, updates find, program updates fine, it does its job very well, cept when i tinker with it and seeing if it detects homemade virus, to test it (shhh) iv been testing em and nav 2004 couldnt catch a simple backdoor trojan, musta had nav configured wrong, but all viruses iv every created were timebombed to delete themesleve on a certain day so thankfully none could do any real harm if it ever got out, which im glad i didnt have the net at the time for that to happen,

The only thing I see flawed in those results is the date. Those tests are nearly a year old. Many of these programs have been updated and they may have changed dramatically for the better or worse.. :D

But interesting nonetheless. Thanks LK

I am using Panda Platinum right now and like it's features and simplicity better than NAV which I tried for a short while.Updates are simple and fast.It picks up suspicious files as well.It has e-mail protection which scans Outlook Express and Outlook and a Firewall. It also has a cpu load manager which reduces cpu usage during scans to prevent other tasks from slowing down.Happy with this so far.I will give NOD32 a try on my laptop which is a low performance machine.

Yep, and another thing wrong or questionable about that site is a site like
This one (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml) has kept track of AV's over the years on all OS's, it has an entirely different ranking. Seems NOD32 is king in all OS since 1998!! You'll also note that AV's that didn't fair well in the past have cleaned up their act, they're fine now and some who test great in the past are now junk.

I wonder why LK's link would rank *Trojan specific* programs with Anti-Virus programs ?, it leads one to believe that great programs such as Trojan Remove aren't very good ranked #40. Most of the security sites I've been show that Trojan Remover and Tauscan would beat any AV at trojan/worm detection!

Oh yeah, that vb100 is a good site. Where do you see the rankings though. All I see is a pass or fail rating.

They don't show rankings, they just show venders results. if you add them up its NOD32

What version do you have that only loads one service? I now have version 2 but it loads: nod32.exe, nod32kui.exe, nod21krn.exe - for about 24,000k

You have the the NOD icon in the sys tray. that is why you see that other stuff. :D just close it. You still get the protection of NOD from what I gather if it is closed.

I'm using NOD 32 now but honestly NAV 2004 handles e-mail viruses better. Before, whenever I would get those zipped archives with passwords that contain viruses, NAV would immediately delete the whole attachment. With NOD, it allows the attachment and only stops you when you open the archive.
