I just had to dump sygate. It was giving me the same troubles that Conan experienced.. won't let me get on a website without allow all... I have since installed Outpost. But the options are endless and it is a tad different. But I like the info that it gives. Much more detailed than Sygate.
Sygate has worked great for so long. I wonder why it just now starts becoming crappy?

maybe its just the admins because I've found that all the problems I have been user-related. ;)

I'm using Zone Alarm Pro on both of my PC's now. I wanted to keep Sygate on the other machine using the older "bug-free" version but it keeps on saying "new version is out, do you want to upgrade?" everytime, so no more Sygate in Conan's house. :msnnerd:

Haven't had any problems with Sygate so far,but if I do it's either Outpost or Zone Alarm.Anyone know how Norton Firewall that comes with it's internet security suite 2003 works?Just got a copy with a mobo I'm installing. :D

Outpost barely makes a hiccup on my PC. It uses less than 3MB of ram, and almost no CPU.
Sygate's SMC.exe would sometimes drain my PC of juice and then eat the peel. :D
I am happy with outpost. It does its job and gives a lot more information than sygate. Like for example it shows what specific IP addresses each browser window/tab connects to, as well as ports, protocols, and duration of connection. I like that. Also, the popups for attempted attacks are much better than the flashing red Sygate icon. They popup, and then go back down immediately. I hate how Sygates icon would stay flashing red until you clicked on it.. then it would go back to green.
Out post is being installed on all my machines this weekend.

Boogs,Sygate has served you well for a couple of years, surely it wasn't all that bad??
Big Booger
March 6th, 2004, 11:06 AM
Of course not. Sygate worked great until recently. It was simple, easy to use, and it did a fine job. In fact, I was displeased with Zone Alarm, that is why I made the switch at the behest of a certain somebody :Poke: . It has only happened recently that I had this problem and with Conan and egghead having it too.. I'm wondering if this is not some kind of bug in the program?

hmmm...
Works like a charm for me...guess I better pay more attention. Only problem I had was that I uninstalled it from a friends pc and the dang thing didnt fully install. Only about 6hrs of internet headache because of it but not too bad.

How does the Norton NIS compare to NOD or Sygate SS? I have used NIS before but wasn't too keen on something.. but I have forgotten what it was that bothered me.

There were times when its add-blocking component would cause 100% CPU usage. I used to be a user since NIS 2001 up to 2002. This glitch started happening during the Peppy's Forum days.

To be honest I haven't had a problem with it yet. It blocks all the bad stuff and doesn't seem to muck things up like ZoneAlarm used to.
I cant comment on how it compares with Sygate as I haven't had a need switch. I tried Sygate once but it seemed a bit cumbersome. This was a while ago so perhaps it seemed a little daunting due to my inexperience...
Anyway if I have anything bad to say about NIS, it's that when logging in, it takes ages to load and my PC (Athlon XP 1800 + 768MB RAM) doesn't really become functional before then :(

Ah, you need to enter a dummy IP Address in your TCP/IP properties of your LAN card for your PC to not have that stall on start-up. Try entering this:
IP Address 10.255.255.10
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

I'll give it a go as soon as I get home. Thanks!
But I'm not 100% clear what you mean. If I change my IP, I wont be connected to my network or have net access...

If you're a stand-alone PC at home there's no problem. If you're networked then that might be a problem. I'm sure Boogs will have some insights about this.

Does it take around 2 mintutes after boot-up, before you can do anything with your PC?

Try doing what conan says. IF it works and your PC loads and boots faster than before you have found the issue.

Yes maybe close to two minutes. I need to go through and disable everything at start up and see what is taking so long. There is a fair bit of other shit that I know I need to disable but have just been too lazy to do so!!
NIS and NAV are always the last to load and take a while. Even on a fresh install of just Windows and NIS. PC isn't really functional until NIS icon pops up in the task bar.

Your PC is actually searching for an IP address, thats the reason for the 2 minute stall. I used to experience that way back during Peppy days until I found that IP address fix.

I still dont follow you...
I have manually assigned it an IP: 192.168.0.2
Why would it be searching for an IP??

The usually stall on startup would be the PC connecting to DHCP and getting automatic IP settings, NIS would have to load before that, then get your IP, then continue to startup. which takes 2mins or so. The easy fix is to assign IP settings to your PC for your network.
However, if you have set your IP and still get stall then there is a bigger issue.

Already done :D I don't use DHCP as it had a bad habit of giving me a different IP when the lease expired
Gonna reformat and install a different AV and Firewall combo!

I'm using Agnitum Outpost Firewall at the moment. While I like almost everything about it, it has slowed down my download speed by about 20 kbps. :(

There is some tweaking you have to do with it.. but I forgot what I had to do.. There are some key components that you have to allow access that speed it up...
Try playing around with it.

Agnitum locks your system down. You have to configure it to use this and that. It takes a while.
At first I couldn't even access the internet or anything. Then I had trouble with emule, Quicktime movies, and so on...
Just make sure when a message pops up about it wanting to allow or block or update, that you select that setting wisely.
:D
Oh and by the way, check this site out for help with rules and other settings*

Using Mcafee Internet Security myself. Includes the personal firewall and antivirus. These components work flawlessly.
MIS also includes a privacy service which is OK but has caused a few issues. The ad blocking is no-where near as good as I expected, blocks most ads but when reply to a message, Hotmail fails to work. This only occurs in IE, it blocks nothing in Firefox so it is fortunate that you can choose to block ads in Firefox yourself.
The cookie filter is also questionable, reducing your ability to properly log out of Hotmail. Doesnt look all that tweakable so I've got it and ad blockin off!
The above two features worked great in Norton Internet Security, but its just too damn slow!

Dont know if you managed to sort the problem with Sygate, but the answer to solve the problem of accerssing certain websites is to add an advanced rule allowing ICMP #3.
Apparently there is an issue with having Sygate behind a router/firewall and this sorts the problem out.
Cheers

I tried Sygate recently and it worked with SP2 and my router finally. However it slowed my download speeds so I'm still sticking with Zone Alarm.
