that dam protowall was blocking it. I have a memorex (just link) dvd+rw/+r anyway.Special Note: If you currently own a 2.4x DVD+RW/+R Drive you must upgrade your firmware. 2.4x Write Speed DVD+RW/+R Drives sold by Memorex, Phillips, H/P, Verbatim, Sony and QPS require a drive firmware upgrade. Memorex 4x media is compliant with the new 4x write speed standards. Using the Memorex 4x Write Speed media with a 2.4x write speed DVD+RW/+R drive that has not had a firmware upgrade to support the new 4x write speed standards may result in writing errors, data retrievable failure and damage to the data on this disc. Please make sure to confirm whether your drive supports the new 4x write speed media before use.

these patches make it region free - not sure if it has anything to do with speed.
I went ahead and flashed it and it's stilll working but how can I tell if it's good for 4x disks?

The first link that you posted Lynch tells you to go to the Phillips website for updates. Once I went to that site, I did a search on your recorder and came up with this link:
Phillips DVD BIOS Update Page (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/dcbint?lang=eng&s=ccc&mode=search&confval=DVD%2BR%2FRW+2.4x8AA&totrec=7&searchstring=DVD%2BR%2FRW+2.4x8AA&country=US)
Here's a direct download:
DVD BIOS update (http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvdr820/dvdr820_fus_eng.zip)
Size: 6886 KB
Worse comes to worse, I think we can think of a few ways to get this file to you :D

hmmm....strange. The link you posted in the original thread tells you to go to the Phillips website to download the updated BIOS. I then performed a search in their download section for "Memorex DVD+RW/+R 2.4x8AA" and it came up with that page. Sorry for the misdirection there ;)
