I picked this up 2 days ago! :p Conan April 29th, 2004, 08:27 AM i dont think my bios can recognize it can the hard drive be defective Normally when the BIOS cannot detect a hard drive, the jumper settings (or cable settings if the jumper is set to Cable Select) are normally wrong. If you have 2 drives both set to Master, only one drive will be seen in the BIOS. biker666_05 April 29th, 2004, 20:07 PM my old hard drive is set to master and the new one to slave efc April 29th, 2004, 20:28 PM Are you using two cables or one? FBM357 April 29th, 2004, 21:04 PM I added another 120 gig drive to my other system without any problem. Like someone mentioned earlier, if your BIOS doesn't detect it, check your jumpers. Usually in the BIOS, the setting is AUTO (auto detect), so that should remain unchanged. As for the jumpers, it depends whether you're using the existing cable (which you would have to jump one as Master and the other Slave), or if you're using your secondary controller, you would then jump the drive as Master. Once detected, you'll have to format for use. As for the drive letter mapping, your system will automatically do it for you (otherwise you can change it yourself). I use Partition Magic, so whenever I alter any of my partitions or remap drive letters, it scans my machine (registry etc) and change the destinations accordingly. :o If you continue to have problems, post them. I'm sure someone will be able to assist you. Good Luck, FBM efc April 29th, 2004, 22:05 PM Since you are having trouble with the setup using jumper pins, try setting the jumpers on both drives to cable select. The use a single drive cable to hook the up. The master drive connects to the end plug. phishhead April 29th, 2004, 22:19 PM oh no not another harddrive thread. biker666_05 April 29th, 2004, 23:23 PM im only using one cable but its not set to cable select my old drive doesnt even have cable select efc April 30th, 2004, 01:43 AM Biker, We don't know what the model number is for your new drive. However, all 40 GB Cavier drives use the pin settings at this site. Click here (http://support.wdc.com/techinfo/general/jumpers.asp) biker666_05 May 6th, 2004, 06:56 AM ok finally got it to boot all the way i looked under device manager and it was there without any error message or anything but its not under my computer ? phishhead May 6th, 2004, 07:02 AM now you need to partition it then format it will find it under computer management and then disk management. biker666_05 May 6th, 2004, 07:06 AM yup ive been there but nothing shows up biker666_05 May 6th, 2004, 07:09 AM when i got to device manager and then click and then right click on the hard drive and click properties i go to volume and then click populate and the status it shows says unreadable whats up with that cash_site May 7th, 2004, 06:02 AM When you partition and format your New HD in Computer Management, pls make sure that you assign the new paritions drive letters ie d,e,f etc etc So you can see them in My Computer. biker666_05 May 7th, 2004, 07:29 AM it doesnt show up under disk management it only says disk 0 cdrom 0 and cdrom 1 cash_site May 11th, 2004, 02:20 AM Sorry to rehash old news, but can we get the picture again... (im a little slow) 1. Are you adding 40Gb HD as a 2nd drive or replacing the old one? 2. How old is the computer that you are installing the HD into? Check the BIOS and documents to see if it can support drives bigger than 32Gb... my old 440BX Pentium3 450 doesnt !! 3. If BIOS etc can support big HDs, check the jumper settings and cables, make sure all are in good working order - another person found that the ribbon was no good! 4. Connect everything and start windows. Being a new HD, it wont show in My Computer, but will be in COmputer Management. 5. Here, you can format, partition, assign Drive letters etc. 6. Your best bet would to create a primary partition using 100% space, then format. It may automatically assign drive letter, else dont worry. 7. Reset computer and let Windows auto-detect and install the HD, then your new HD will be in My COmputer. Let us know how it goes. biker666_05 May 11th, 2004, 03:27 AM im adding it as a second hd the computer is very old ive had it since i was like in sixth grade but i did put a new mother board and memory im going to try what u said tonight thanx
