cekestner May 4th, 2004, 01:05 AM Okay, the option for making the screensaver passworded, where is it?
I seem to recall that it used to be in Desktop Properties under the screensaver tab but it sure isn't there...

Yes it's there. When you choose a screensaver, there is a tab that says "on resume password protect".
cekestner May 4th, 2004, 02:03 AM Mine doesn't. It says:
"On resume, display Welcome screen"
cash_site May 4th, 2004, 02:37 AM Mine doesn't. It says:
"On resume, display Welcome screen"
Check in the screensaver types if there is a windows logon saver? else, select the "on resume, display welcome screen" and then password protect your account.
cekestner May 4th, 2004, 03:11 AM No, there is not.
This is very frustrating.
I looked at my notebook, and it's not there, either.
What'd they do? Kill this option for XP Home?
cash_site May 4th, 2004, 05:04 AM Yes They may have removed this feature from XP home. So, your only option is to do what I said in previous post, sorry.
cekestner May 5th, 2004, 01:31 AM This link implies that it's there in XP Home, so go figure.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;328000
In fact, the page states that this page specifically applies to both XP Professional as well as XP Home.
Grrr.
SupaStar May 5th, 2004, 01:40 AM No, I'm certain it's there in XP Home.
What happens when you select "On resume, display welcome screen"? Ensure that your account is password protected.
cekestner May 6th, 2004, 03:51 AM Nothing happens.
The screensaver exits like it's supposed to, and everything runs fine.
rik May 6th, 2004, 04:28 AM Possibly a Windows Update changed that option?? Anyone?
SupaStar May 6th, 2004, 04:40 AM Nothing happens.
The screensaver exits like it's supposed to, and everything runs fine.
So you move the mouse, and you see all your documents and things as they were?
Hmm..that's odd. Have you tried System Restore? Restoring to a point where you know that it worked might do the trick!
slooksterPSV July 7th, 2004, 08:19 AM Here's how to do it, I found this in help after doing millions of searches. Microsoft needs to reevaluate their help system:
Log on to the computer as an administrator.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
If it is not already selected, click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
NOTE: The Use Fast User Switching check box is unavailable until you click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
Click to select the Use Fast User Switching check box, and then click Apply Options. Quit the User Accounts tool.
Email me if it works for you slooksterPSV@hotmail.com

Conan January 5th, 2005, 13:30 PM Maybe you guys are lacking a proper video driver or motherboard chipset driver?

FastGame January 5th, 2005, 13:39 PM My XP Home & Pro are like Conans :)
gowsic January 5th, 2005, 14:07 PM Maybe you guys are lacking a proper video driver or motherboard chipset driver?
nope
i have the latest driver installed
cash_site January 5th, 2005, 22:23 PM I think it actually comes down to a couple of things.
a) Does the user and/or administrator accounts all have passwords?
b) How do users log on to the system, ie Welcome screen or via Ctrl+alt+del?
c) is Fast-user switching enabled?
1) My Admin account has password, but my normal user account doesnt.
2) I use Ctrl+alt+del to log on to windows XP
3) Fast user switching is disabled (I can only logoff)
With these settings I can enable password on screensaver. Also, The password dialog screen is not like in win2k or earlier, it jumps to the welcome screen or logon screen for XP.
gowsic January 6th, 2005, 03:15 AM a) Does the user and/or administrator accounts all have passwords? have admin previliedge
b) How do users log on to the system, ie Welcome screen or via Ctrl+alt+del? part of a domain so Ctrl+alt+del
c) is Fast-user switching enabled? no
cash_site January 6th, 2005, 22:41 PM Hmm... so with these settings you still dont have password option?
Ok, since you are part of the domain, what role do you have and what role is the computer... ie, are you administrator of the domain working on a server or workstation etc... The logic here, is that the password option might actually be a Global Policy Attribute that is set when you logon on to the domain. You should ask your Network admin or Domain admin to check the GPO settings for the network, you might have to change OUs or get re-assigned access rights etc...
Talk to Rik, or Dehcbad25 about GPO and its settings.
anon February 20th, 2005, 05:44 AM Nothing happens.

I've been struggling through this. Seems that if the screen saver starts and you move the mouse too soon, you don't need a password. Wait about one minute and then it asks for it.
Drove me crazy until I found this out.
egghead February 20th, 2005, 06:05 AM very weird problem. I have the option yet i have no password to log on so who knows...
try this until we get it sorted out.

Yeah I just read this in some tip newsletter, there is a cooling-off period... if i can find it again i'll post, i think it was some registry hack or something.
Zema February 21st, 2005, 17:07 PM On my Windows XP home edition, if I go to the control panel>display>screensaver tab, I have the option to check the box next to 'On resume, display Welcome Screen'
I think that once you initially set up an account on XP with password access, then once the screen saver is on, you will then need the password to get back in.
Does this help?
Tokenekie April 3rd, 2005, 09:44 AM Hmm you people seem to be having troubles getting the "password protect" checkbox to become clickable. Well I have that enabled but is there any way to get the screensaver to return and display the welcome screen and not the boring windows 2000 "unlock computer" screen?
merkin April 21st, 2005, 20:40 PM OK, I've figured it out, strangely enough by doing the opposite that SlooksterPSV did in his post: http://www.techzonez.com/forums/showpost.php?p=63516&postcount=12
So, if your "on resume, password protect" box has inexplicably changed to a "on resume, display welcome screen" box (as mine did) here's what to do -- with thanks to the Slookster:
1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
3. Click Change the way users log on or off.
4. Deselect the "Use the Welcome screen" check box, and the "Use Fast User Switching" check box also deselects.
5. Click OK and exit User Accounts.
Then display the Screensaver properties pane in the normal way and ... hey presto .. it's changed back again! I thank you..... :)
egghead April 21st, 2005, 21:07 PM thanks merkin,
well done!
Si1v3r Mo0n July 30th, 2005, 14:22 PM :D yay! it works on my computer too!! but i hate how Windows had to set it up like this. It makes things so tedious. And the strange thing is... on my brother's XP, he has the Welcome screen and the password protected screensaver enabled. Makes me jealous how that managed to happen.
