LOS ANGELES -- A Lancaster construction worker who slipped on the job, triggering a nail gun that shot six of the long projectiles into his head and neck, will join his doctor Wednesday to discuss his recovery.

Isidro Mejia, 39, had four nails penetrate his skull -- three went into his brain -- in the April 19 accident, according to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. Another of the nails lodged in his vertebral column just below the base of the skull.

"The neurosurgeon could not believe Isidro lived. With injuries like that, he should have been dead," a hospital spokesperson told Britain's The Sun newspaper.

Mejia was airlifted to the trauma center at Providence Holy Cross and, in less than four hours, Dr. Rafael Quinonez delicately removed five of the nails, according to the hospital.

The sixth, stuck in his face, was left in place until the swelling went down and removed April 23, doctors said.

Quinonez and Mejia are scheduled to talk about the case at a news conference at the hospital Wednesday.

Shouldn't these nail guns have some sort of safety? Can you imagine the pain?

I can believe slipping and triggering a nail gun to go off once, but six times ought to bring suspicion of foul play,I would think.Wow! :D

Yea, saw the x-ray. Enought to keep you from sleeping.

The nail gun does have a safety device built into it. The problem is that the way workers use the gun, make the safety device the firing device. There is a sliding unit on the head. You push the gun down and then pull the trigger. Most users hold the trigger down and move the gun from place to place.

The news stated that the injured man fell off a ladder onto the worker holding the gun. He must have had the trigger depressed.

Dude, that xray will haunt my dreams forever!! My eyes!! My Brain and spine!! Oh man, that was bad.

Nasty accident... Yes BB those Nail Guns are supposed to have Safety's on, however, MANY builders remove it or at least jam it open to allow quick firing...

Also, @ zipp, some nail guns are semi-automatic, that is only fire one per press of trigger. However, bigger constructions guns are fully automatic, to be able to lay down hundreds of nails per minute when building large structures.

I've heard some nasty stories from my Uncle and cousin's who are builders. Poor ppl getting shot with nail guns while they visit the porta-loo .... its actually quite funny sometimes :p
