I installed off the manufacturer of the motherboard but it says modem won't start - any advice? thanksDo you mean the manufacturer of the modem and not motherboard??

Is it listed in device manager?

Well, the motherboard came with a CD with drivers. All it says in device manager is "pci modem" and under manufacturer it says, "unknown"

You've confused me.Why would PCI modem drivers be on a Motherboard CD.

So you don't know who the modem manufacturer is ?? Take a look at the chipset on the modem.Who is the chip manufacturer.

I don't know. There are a bunch of drivers on the CD. Here is the path: E:\DRIVER\MODEM\PCTel\WinXP - is this for the telephone modem? I tried to updated with windows but it won't - says it can't find the software.

The modem was puchased separately I take it. What brand/chipset is it? (check the box)

You dont have an on-board modem in addition to a PCI one do you??

I'll have to take the modem back out I guess. But I did not have to do anything but use the software provided the last few times.

I never replaced the original phone modem after installing a second cat5 type modem thing. But now I want to put it back in.

I don't see any modem drivers listed on your screenshot. Are you sure its a modem you are trying to install and not a network card.

Ok thanks - It still says it cannot find drivers using the wizard - and there are no driver updates indicated at windows update

*edit - all I see on the chip is a sticker that is an "e" - that is all. On the back there is "Rheinland" and EN F656-ESW-NDPR and also "STC"

*edit found it with EN F656-ESW-NDPR - it's a "Netodragon"

hehe - finally got the driver - thanks guys

Now the frustrating part: I installed this PC telephone thing and I do not understand it. If only I were 16 again.

now lynch why did you bother installing an analog modem if you're on broadband. Are you gonna be faxing stuff?

Edit: I got some great A+(hardware cert) books if you want me to upload them to msn let me know. Might help you get a handle on this hardware stuff.

yes, fax and phone - no internet. I'm not good with the books-especially since I have a vision tracking problem. I'm a hands on kind of guy. I comprehend words, but something gets lost between reading and actually doing. I need to see and touch to learn -reading is secondary. Thanks anyway, I appreciate it.
