missing drives
helllo....hehe... some of you are going to find this amusing. My DVD and CD drives are missing. The DVD drive keeps lighting up with no CD in tray and it won't even open. I think it has something to do with replacing sys32.dll file but i'm not sure. Is there a way I can just add the drives back in? Thanks

You're right,it is amusing. :p :p Why did you replace the sys32.dll ??
Have you tried rebooting? Used system restore? Run sfc /scannow ? (remember space between sfc and / )
Or try the following:
Start > Run. Type in regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Click on Key Name: (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318)
Right click LowerFilters and select Modify, then delete the value data.(not the actual value string). Now do the same for UpperFilters.
Close regedit and reboot.

Thanks Reverend but that did not change anything.

Are they listed in device manager ?
I presume both drives are on the Secondary IDE Channel as Master and Slave. Go into device manager and uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel, under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Then reboot.
You may also want to check the IDE cable and if possible try another one, just to rule out a cable failure.
-
Still nothing Reverend. The CD light comes on and the drawer opens. The DVD drawer still will not open but the light still flashes randomly.
-
Check your device manager as Rev suggested, if their not listed then I would say that its defiantly your IDE cable is faulty or not correctly installed.
Just make sure that they are located in cmos

If it's listed what is it supposed to say? If it's the cables, why does the drawer and lights work?

it will say
dvd/dc-rom drives
it should be in device manager.
do the drives show up in the bios?
if it shows in the bios it is a windows problem.
i had a problem last year with my drives not working but i had yellow exclamation marks.
i did the fix Reverend suggestion but It did not work so I deleted the whole string which windows quicly said you couldnt and it deleted molst values in the key
i rebooted and my drives came back and installed themselves.
you do not have then in device manager and i suggest checking your computers bios menu to see if they detect.
-
I'm not sure where to look in bios but is this it?
IDE primary - none
IDE secondary slave - none
I tried sys restore - did not work.
-
you should see the cdrom in that screen
do you have an autodetect?
press autodetect if you can.
most motherboards are set to auto
check you cables and try again then remove one cd-rom and try again and do the same with the other

Yep that's it. Your drives haven't been detected. Check your IDE cables.
I had a faulty hard disk cause this once. It was on the same IDE cable as the CD.
-
Lynch you were messing around in your case weren't you...your IDE cable is not connected all the way or like the guys said the cable is bad. I don't understand how in the bios it says *IDE primary - none* your HD wouldn't work if it said that.....
-
hehe - all the cables were tight and I have not moved the pc one inch for months. However, upon starting the pc up the drives are working now - cables have bad connections I guess - while still being powered but no signal. Thanks fellas! :)

Turn your sub-woofer down.....and keep you hands out of the case...hehe
