startup message
Help
I have win 98 <not second edition>
At my startup screen this message comes ::
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a wndows application.
The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file,but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose , try installing the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file , try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
D:\folder\freetel1.vxd
Can anyone give me any way of ridding me of this message??
tnx

A few questions:
What did you uninstall prior to that message suddenly appearing?
Are there any references to freetel in add/remove programs?
Did you uninstall by just deleting the folder?
-
freetel.vxd
Yes freetel was just deleted without uninstalling it
no freetel in add\remove
in system.ini that reference is there to freetel.vxd
freetel software is also tough to get <www.freetel.com>
so do i edit system.ini and how ???

First of all,open Windows explorer and go to Tools > Folder Options.
On the view tab enable Show hidden files and folders and click apply.
Now got to Start > Run and type in sysedit , hit enter.
Several windows will open, click on the system.ini window and scroll down until you find the following (yours will be slightly different,i've just used an example)
[386Enh]
device=C:\FREETEL\freetel1.vxd
device=C:\FREETEL\freetel2.vxd
add rem in front of device=
save the changes and reboot.
