win me/98 install over xp

my friend wants to remove windows xp n install windows Me or win 98. the computer says winme/98 can only be installed in DOS mode. How shld he restart in DOS mode? Can he install winme/98 without formatting harddisk?

(also when we say compact disc, why do we say harddisk?)

Why would your friend want to do that? I think you would have to reformat to get that done.

Nope, 98 and Me are very unstable compared to XP.
